So what do you read?

As perhaps a different change of pace, one wonders
what the users here read. I'm not looking to debate the critical texts versus the received texts, or KJB versus the modern versions, but think it would be interesting to have a poll to see what is read here. Please select the one you most-often read, my brethren. I have included the five most-popular; there are various polls such as Gallup who have determined these are the most selling translations,
as well as an other column for translations obscure or merely not listed among the "glut" as White said in his interview with Stephen Anderson of available translations.


However, if you're too lazy to read the Bible, I've also included a sluggard's column. It's shameful that should be.
To avoid necromantic posts, the cap set is a reasonable 14 days.

I read the NIV most often. In my estimation it is the best all-round English Bible translation. And...it happens to be the most popular and best-selling translation.

I see there is no option to select more than one choice so I went with the NIV. It's what I read out of the most nowadays. Started out reading the KJV and read it for years and years. Then went to the NKJV for about 5 years. Now I'm on the NIV for about the last 5 years.

I also have a parallel Bible with the KJV, NASB, NIV and Amplified Version which is fascinating to read. I find the NIV gives me the most insight into what the passage is communicating.

From the word for word list - I read the King James and ESV.
From the thought for thought list - I read the NCV and NIV.
And I sometimes read the New Living from the paraphrase list.

Scarlet, I see some errors in that chart.

The NKJV should be to the left of the KJV.

The RSV,ESV and NRSV should be grouped together in a cluster.

The NAB needs to be placed slightly to the left of the HCSB. The NIV needs to be put just a click to the right of the HCSB.

The NLT needs to be placed where the NCV is on the chart.

The NIrV should be positioned on the left side of the NLT.

The MSG needs to be put in a place even more removed from the paraphase section.

The middle area should be called the mediating versions because those translations have a good deal
of formal equivalence and some functional equivalence as well.

I had to give a completely honest answer and vote "I'm lazy." I have not read in years. I think the last time I picked up the bible and made the choice to read was when I was a small child. I used to use it as a way to scare away my nightmares and it would calm me. I truly need to start making the move to find that balance again.

I do wish there was a way not to have comments on this thread because the intent is just a friendly data-gathering attempt. However, this ain't the movies, so forget about me!

That chart is very opinionated. I agree though, that with 100,000 estimated variations betwixt the Authorized King James Bible and the NKJV it therefore deserves to be placed leftward of the former.

I did not allow multiple selections as it muddies with outliers the set of data. If you wish, start a poll after this one closes on the fourth, I pray, for yourself allowing this. You will find many inconsistencies in the string!

My father used to beat me with his AVs. One is my typewriter Bible; the wracked other is a bookshelf mole.
Yet, in spite of this I cannot go a delay if I do not read at least five chapters per day, if tired, but usually it is 21/day.
At that rate you tell me how fast you can read all 150 Psalms, 290 chapters of the NT, 889 old.
Assuming you have a Bible reading 1189 chapters, it can be read once per gregorian calendar year at a measly three chapters a each day.
1189/3=396.3…
396.3…/365=1.08

150/3=50
The psalms can be read in fifty days at this speed.

Get the Bible in an audio version and listen to it. It might be easier if you don't read.

The ESV has been my primary Bible for years; I use the Holman as the secondary (that's what the pastor mostly preaches from) and referred often to the NET and some others. Now I find myself often using the Lexham instead of the HSB as the second choice. It may become my favorite.

It deserves to be indicated:
•There are some leftist translations, and even the inane Conservative Bible who chopped up the AV because it was not neoconservative enough. Coptics add 22 books more unique to their text. That is beyond this simple poll.
•I am trying as best as possible not to feed a debate here as this will affect the data. May we all so think. This too is beyond the point of this simple poll. Read what you read till the Father hen calls his chickens home, and the wise men bow down to cast their crowns at His throne. If you want to believe the Critical text line is true to "the Hebrew" or "the Chaldee" or "the Greek"; or if you believe the AV is correct, or hold to a Textus Receptus only postion, fine as well. More power to you.
These in addition exceed the point of this poll. The apostles say, But if a man be ignorant, let him be ignorant; in the same stroke being persuaded fully in one's mind.
•What is the intention of the poll is an honest representation of they who read what, poor as water, or holy syllables & phrases like Wycliff or Coverdale said. Therefore the poller doesn't care for this one post your preference or opinions, just what you read. The data generated may help in a greater overall comprehension on this board in a godly way (Psalm 133) without opinions or sharp debates, or accusation. It will tell us also where you theologically incline without forcing or goading. It seemeth to be a more expidient way, brethren.

What part of my father savagely beating me with his Bible is not clear, often without provocation? He loved to do it in the church house or the car or the parking lot just out of view of others. It is really beyond this post.

It is also pretty plain, Rippon, you do math worse than a Louisiana public school system SPED (special education- the days a-gone by) student; the Bible has 1189 chapters. Three parts of that is 396.3… but when divided by the days in a year it means three chapters read consecutively each day; it means the whole canon, Genesis to Apocalypse, can be read 1.08 times. If any man lack understanding, the good news is God giveth understanding liberally. Ask & receive.

I share this to hopefully encourage people to Christ who heals every wound. Horsewhip from his dressage, yes. Strap nein. That comment is entirely out of line. I hope you never fear when the whip lacerates that it nicked the spine or kidneys. Not fun. Paul's back was barely holden together from his whippings, 40 strokes save one.

When one makes an outrageous claim the claimant needs to furnish support. You need to document. Do you think everyone takes your word for everything you have said? It's your responsibility --not ours. Cite sources JP.
