So you want to play with Linux?

There are other versions that do the same and give a person a good look at the system, but they do not cure the problem of installing/uninstalling software etc. I tried Kbuntu or something like that and could not figure out how to get windows programs to run in it.

I rather like the idea of getting rid of windows but there are a few windows programs that I really need.

Have a puter in the garage I ding around with on linux but as yet it is Greek to me :smilewinkgrin:

 

One program is called "wine" I bought a cd online that was supposed to run windows - got here and it would not so emailed the guy. He told me how to use wine only it wasn't included on the cd.

He promptly sent me a bunch of code to type into the terminal window to download it and install it, but that puter is not online so haven't gotten that done yet.

I downloaded an iso for another distro and it has wine on it and it installed the program but the program won't run :tonofbricks:

Someday when it is warmer out there maybe I will take another stab at linux.

Just got a tiny laptop that comes with linux but it was the same thing. A terminal and coding is the only way to do things. Such a nice bunch of systems, programs and graphics and you have to deal with dos window type headaches - have to wonder how they think linux will ever go main stream?

 

Until Linux truly becomes a GUI it will not become mainstream. There are some distros that come close, but that is the problem... some. Windows is a unified front (even with the different versions), whereas Linux has tons of micro-fronts.

Add to that the fact that many in the Linux community look upon n00bs with disdain (much like the Apple community)...

 

I agree trotter.
I think that there are strengths to linux but it is just in no way ready for main stream use.
That said, it would actually be a good system for a person that new NOTHING about computers that had a relative that was good with Linux who could set up a basic system for them.

But for the vast majority of people that want to install their own software and be their own system admins without having an A+ certification, Windows or Mac is the way to go, well Mac is the BESt way but Windows is a better second place than Linux.

One thing I don't get is that you think Mac users disdain new Mac users? I have NEVER seen that.
in fact I have only seen the opposite.

 

:laugh: Amen, Bro. Dale! We Mac-evangelists are always ready to welcome a new Mac user to the family, and provide the nurture and support needed. {Although "support" will not be a major need, as with those other guys! :: }

 

Agreed. I never experienced disdain when I switched to Mac, but the opposite. Many were more than willing to help me and answer my questions.

 

Not personally, but I know some who have been treated as ignorant and stupid because they asked some basic question on some Mac forums. True, this may not be the case of the whole community, but it is of some. thankfully there are people like you here who are of the mac persuasion.

I can understand some elitism no matter what the topic, but some people take it to extremes. Linux seems to have the biggest contingent of this. I really don't understand why, though. Without some guidance, Linux is beyond most people. The funny part is that those who look down on noobs also needed help when they started... but that fact seems to have been forgotten.
