Panera Bread's Socialist 'Pay What You Want' Experiment Fails Miserably
Panera Bread has shuttered the last of its ideologically driven "pay what you want" restaurants.
The chain opened its first donation-based community cafe in St. Louis, Missouri, in 2010. Under the model championed by the company’s founder Ron Shaich, the restaurant operated like a typical Panera, but offered meals at a suggested donation price, with the goal of raising awareness about food insecurity.

Failure could really relate to the food. I found very little to desire in their menu cept their too expensive fruit cups and dry cinnamon rolls. Service wasn't all that great at the one we went too either, though ours wasn't one of the pay what you want stores.

Panera Bread is very popular around here and some of their baked goods look very nice. I go to one of them for breakfast now and then because it is near the place that works on my car. I agree with exscentric that they are expensive and the menu is very different. However, the one that I go to is very busy and the food is good but not my normal diet, which is a nice change now and then. I can think of another bakery/café in a nearby suburb that has even better baked goods.

I think that it is funny that the socialized store failed because the common person fails to understand how expensive that it is to operate a restaurant and declined to pay fair market value for what they took. Socialists look like cheapskates who want something for nothing all the time.

Dumb move in the first place. They simply ignored the fact that more takers would show up and eat their food without paying.

Really stupid.
