    1. Calvinists believe in Unconditional Election. By Uncondition Election they don't mean that God had no purpose in election, or that it was capricious, but that there is no condition that man can meet that makes him good enough to save.

Do non-calvinists believe there is something good enough in man to come to Christ on his own good merits?

    Yes or No.

Again, by adding "on his own good merits" speaks of works, and salvation is NOT OF WORKS.

Remove "on his own good merits" from the question and the answer is unequivocably YES! We are indeed commanded to come to Christ, to believe in Jesus, To have faith in God. If Coming were based on merit, no one could come. But it is not, it is based on God's desire for us to come, and not our own.

YES we have some intrensic value to God else he would not save us by the mere thread of our faith in HIM.

Again a poorly worded question that prevents a yes or no answer!

TCassidy, here is what Calvinists actually mean by "Unconditional Election"

"The Westminster Confession states the doctrine thus:

By the decree of God, for the manifestation of His glory, some men and angels are predestinated to everlasting life, and others are foreordained to everlasting death.

These angels and men, thus predestinated and foreordained, are particularly and unchangeably designed; and their number is so certain and definite that it cannot be either increased or diminished.

Those of mankind that are predestinated unto life, God, before the foundation of the world was laid, according to His eternal and immutable purpose, and the secret counsel and good pleasure of His will, hath chosen in Christ, unto everlasting glory, out of His mere grace and love, without any foresight of faith or good works, or perseverance in either of them, or any other thing in the creature, as conditions, or causes moving Him thereunto; and all to the praise of His glorious grace.

As God hath appointed the elect unto glory, so hath He, by the eternal and most free purpose of His will, foreordained all the means thereunto. Whereby they who are elected, being fallen in Adam, are redeemed by Christ, are effectually called unto faith in Christ by His Spirit working in due season; are justified, adopted, sanctified, and kept by His power through faith unto salvation. Neither are any other redeemed by Christ, effectually called, justified, adopted, sanctified, and saved, but the elect only.

The rest of mankind, God was pleased, according to the unsearchable counsel of His will, whereby He extendeth or withholdeth mercy as He pleaseth, for the glory of His sovereign power over His creatures, to pass by, and to ordain them to dishonor and wrath for their sin, to the praise of His glorious justice"

That God, in eternity past has "elected" some to eternal life, and damned the rest to eternal suffering.

Your "but that there is no condition that man can meet that makes him good enough to save." is yet another question that suggests that non Calvinists think they are good enough to be saved. This is a complete distortion of the truth, as non one who truly is born again, and loves the Lord Jesus does!

Please quit asking stupid questions, and act your age

No I don't think so but God has given His word, HS and nature as some of the things that show man God. He has done all the work, to be saved (the work of Christ on the cross) the HS to convict and His gospel of salvation. He has done it all. Now man must face what he is to do with it.

Amen! I agree. And thanks again for the gentlemanly response.
I agree. Man must face his own sin, Christ's sacrifice, and the wrath of God on his sin. And then, by God's grace, he is able to come to Christ for salvation. [IMG]

Do scriptures say that God loves a contrite heart?
Can man have a contrite heart?
Does God love a cheerful giver?
Does God love those who have faith in him?
Does God love those who are like unto his own heart?
Does God love the tender hearted?
    Does God love the meek?
    Does God love the Peacemakers?
    Does God love the obedient?
    Does God love the sinner?
Does God love those who fear him?
Does God love those who pray to him?

Seems to me that if God loves all these things that man is capable of, the answer to the question is YES!
Does Jesus stand at the door and Knock?
Does Jesus leave the 99 and search for the 1 who is lost?
Does God's spirit go to those who are in trouble?
Does God desire that none should be lost?
Does God go forth looking for those things in man?

It seems to me that Calvinist's have a completely distorted view of man, the only species on earth that God created in his own image.
