Soothsayer Or Prophet

Scripture uses the words translated as prophet is two different ways. Today, if someone presents God's word, as found in scripture, accurately, he or she is acting as God's prophet. However, if what is presented is not found IN God's word, but has been read INTO God's word, they are NOT a prophet of God, but a false teacher. Beware of anyone who insists his or her view should be adopted, rather than saying search the scriptures and discern for yourselves, if the view presented is accurate.

The second usage is someone who has been inspired by God directly, and what he or she says can be taken as God's additional word, and it can be added to scripture. And there are two views concerning these "prophets." Cessionalists believe the sign and wonder gifts have ceased. Once the NT was completed, those gifts were no longer needed, and therefore God suspended giving those gifts, including "prophecy" in the second sense. However, other well studied believers think the gifts have NOT been suspended, that individuals still have the gift of tongues, of healing, and of prophecy in the second sense. I am on the side of the Cessionalists.

I believe God can do whatever He wants in any dispensation. Jews require signs and yet most of the Charismatic churches are made up of Gentiles. Gentiles require knowledge yet those Gentiles often deny logic or proof that their favorite person or group are frauds.

The issue is not what God can do, but what He has chosen to do.
