Lou Holtz is a stand-up guy. I really despise what his players did to him at the end of his career. But amn, you got to respect their decision to take the stand they did. This is enough to probably turn me into a Gamecocks fan.

Spurrier joining the Gamecocks next year - another reason to become a Gamecocks fan.

 

Clemson did the same thing. But neither Bowden nor Holtz wanted that decision to be made. Bowden said missing a bowl game would be unfair, and Holtz said he hope that USC would go to a bowl game but someone else would have to make that decision.

The decision was made by the ADs and presidents.

National exposure for recruiting. They are losing money. And they are losing a reward for a season of hard work.

Seldom do I disagree with you, but at this point I not consider Steve Superior a good hire. Probably personal bias, but it did ny heart good to see the Deadskins fall on thier tails when he was coach. Of course I am a long time Cowboy and fan of any school in Texas over any school in FL - or any other state for that matter!

I believe many coaches are successful only at one level of their sport. Rick Pitino recognized that he wasn't gonna be successful as a pro coach, and had enough class to step down from a lucrative contract. Spurrier may have had the same experience.

Spurrier was a great college player, but he tanked in the pros. Could be that he's just a college guy. Shoot, he may not hav had much success as a high school coach, either.

marshall U. had a hoops coach named Rick Huckabay, who was fairly successful...but he got caught feathering the nests of some players. After his hurried departure from Marshall, he managed to be hired by a local high school(South Point Pointers, for anyone familiar with this area...You remember, don't you, Mr. Charles Meadows?) All their fans called them "Huck's Hounds", but they had only mediocre success, MUCH less success in comparison with what he'd done at the college level. (Soon after the season, Huck was accused of inappropriate behavior with some students, and left the area.)

Bottom line for coaching, however, is winning. Teams considered to be at the top echelon of their sport in their level don't have much patience with coaches who may be faced with "rebuilding". That was the case for Nebraska football who fired a coach(Frank Solich) who had a 9-3 record, and was 58-19 in 6 years. (I think they regret that move now.)

Spurrier may have lasted a coupla more years with the 'Skins because of his reputation, but he wisely resigned while he still had top market value among colleges.

Sadly, I believe both Holtz and Paterno have likely fallen victim to "Father Time".
