Southern Baptists urged to root out molesters
Advocates for sex abuse victims in Roman Catholic Church shift their focus

The Chicago-based Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests has started a campaign to call attention to alleged sex abuse committed by Southern Baptist ministers and concealed by churches.

SNAP presented a letter Monday to Southern Baptist Convention executive committee members in Nashville, asking the group to adopt a zero-tolerance policy on sex abuse and to create an independent review board to investigate molestation reports.

A convention policy and/or investigation really can't do anything short of rooting molestors out of convention agencies. It would not mean anything at all to the individual churches.

Although the convention could probably do a lot towards educating churches.

It sounds as if this organization has the misconception that the SBC has authority over its member churches.

No one outside a local church has any authority inside a local church. The convention board has no say in what goes on in any church.

The problem of abuse should be dealt with severely, but it cannot be done this way.

==Very true but as Lagardo points out there is a vast misunderstanding of how the SBC actually works. This misunderstanding is not only in the secular world but also within the SBC itself. I don't even really like to call the SBC a denomination.

The only action the SBC, State conv, or local association could do would be to withdrawl fellowship; therefore, the church could no longer call itself a Southern Baptist Convention church.:tear:

I agree SNAP has no idea about how Baptist polity works. They must think we operate like the Presbyterians, Methodists or Episcopalians. SNAP probably thinks we have our pastors "assigned" to us by a bishop/district superintendant or they are vetted by a presbytery.

IIRC, the SBC is the largest "Protestant" organization. But that doesn't mean it operates under the same rules as the "Protestants" operate under.

The problem looks like a no-win one for the SBC. SNAP and the media probably will not understand the SBC when it says
Not that the SBC would put the last sentence in bold, its spokesmen are too smart for that.
