How many Southern Gospel fans are on here? And if you are like me and love Southern Gospel, what would be some groups you like?

I used to love SG music, but over the last decade, they have become very contemporary in their style. The old style artists have all passed on and now the new generation is playing what is truly in their hearts... rock and roll style.

Jch, I'm not sure I'd call myself a "fan", but southern Gospel style is a good part of what I was raised on. But for me it wasn't so much of listening to quartets as singing the songs in church and going to community singings where we sang the songs. I've only been to hear about two or three groups in person -- the Cathedrals and the Inspirations for certain. Most of listening to groups has been Sunday mornings on the radio. I suppose one of my favorite songs to listen to (generally I prefer singing to listening) is "Is that the Old Ship of Zion". [live by the Kingsmen]

I was standing on the banks of the river
Looking out over life’s troubled sea
When I saw that ole ship that was sailing
Is that the ole ship of Zion I see.

Its hull was bent and battered
From the storms of life I could see
Waves were rough but that ole ship kept sailing
Is that the ole ship of Zion I see.

At the stern of the ship stood the captain
I could hear as he called out my name
Get on board it’s the ole ship of Zion
It will never pass this way again

As I step on board I’ll be leaving
All my sorrows and heartaches behind
I’ll be safe with Jesus the captain
Sailing out on the ole ship of Zion.

Me a big fan? You know it! Gotta love the Whisnants, Martins, Isaacs, Talleys, LordSong, Gaither Vocal Band, Gold City, Kingdom Heirs and Mark Lowry. Been to several "Homecoming" concerts, loved them all. Some of the great ones have a new home now, including George Younce, Howard and Vestal Goodman, Anthony Burger, Jake Hess, Hovie Lister and Glen Payne. Still love their music, still miss them greatly ...

    Who's your faves, jch-singer?

I've heard most of the groups you've mentioned, all very good. I have not heard the Crystal Valley Quartet but sure they're premiere as well.

PJ, if'n I re-collect correctly, you play the electric bass. Do you play this style ?

Also, if you guys like SG, check out Doyle Lawson's gospel recordings. He's taken the high, tight harmonies of SG and fused them with the all-acoustic bluegrass style of music. I own several recordings, and have met him & seen his shows, and I think he's great.

Personally I like Gaither Vocal Band, The Isaacs, Signature Sound, and The Martins, just to name a few. Not a hardcore fan, but its hard to not enjoy most of the stuff these groups do... GVB's a little tough for me sometimes with the absence of Phelps, but the new guy is doing great too.

Definitely agree with you, but somebody needs to tell Guy Penrod that hair like his doesn't look good.....................EVER.

I went to Dollywood with my parents last year, and saw a group called the Kingdom Heirs. I didn't really want to see them, but since my Mom did, I kept quiet and went into the theater. I had a great time, and enjoyed them. The tenor was not a tenor, he was an ALTO! He had an amazingly high range.

    Hope you are well,
    BiR

Wow, great memory! And yes, mostly southern gospel. Both of our base guitars are electric so I guess it isn't "true" blue grass, but we play some blue grass also.

I haven't seen GVB in concert since David's exit. IMHO, GVB hasn't been the same since Mark Lowry left them but Guy's voice is actually my favorite. Wow, is he ever smooooooth ...

We too make time for their concert when at Dollywood. They're genuine too, and their pianist is fab!

This coming from somenone who has stated previously that he has no preferences in anything...food, music, clothes, etc. Your credibility has been called into question.

I like the Gaither Vocal Band, and that's about it. Love most lyrics, hate the sound...

It's a fairly new song. That's the only CD I found with it on there. Just trying to be helpful.
