Spirit of Prophecy, Testimony of Jesus

I had desired One Baptist to answer this but it appears he is both busy and happy to respond. So to relieve my beloved brother of this task, am now opening it to everyone here.

Revelation 12:17 (ESV)
17 Then the dragon became furious with the woman and went off to make war on the rest of her offspring, on those who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus.

Revelation 19:10 (ESV)
10 Then I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God.” For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

What is 'testimony of Jesus' also known as the 'spirit of prophecy'?

I've always accounted the testimony of Jesus to be equivalent with salvation. In terms of language, it seems akin to Paul stating "I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus."

The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy in that prophecy was a pointer to us toward salvation. Salvation through Jesus Christ is the end-point, or culmination, of prophecy. Of course, not all prophecy points to salvation, but neither does all preaching. The spirit of the text remains.

Does that make sense?

I will again state that Prophecy is in view and the writer is telling us that Prophecy has life through Christ. You are making the Testimony of Jesus the subject being defined. Do we have the "spirit of prophecy" when we witness for Christ? Or does Prophecy always have the Testimony of Jesus?

Think about it: what prophecy does not center on Christ?

God bless.

The testimony of Jesus, aka the spirit of prophecy, is what Ellen White does not have.

EGW is more than a false prophet, she is both an enchanter and witch who has cast a spell over her disciples by the power of her master, Satan.

There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch.
11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.

Consider this particular prophetic delusion: There is soon coming a day when Sabbath- keepers (Adventists) will be persecuted, imprisoned and even executed when the imaginary mandatory National Sunday Worship Law is enacted.

Anyone with a modicum of intelligence is aware that the general population could care less what day religious folk worship their God/gods.

The repeal of Sunday Blue laws is but one testimony to that fact.

Today, only a handful of blue laws remain, and most of these regulate the sale of alcohol. For example, many states limit its sale on Sunday, either all day or for a limited duration, from package stores or entirely, including Arkansas (sales prohibited), Indiana (most sales prohibited, with exceptions for restaurants, taverns and local breweries), Maine (no sales between 1 a.m. and 9 a.m.), Minnesota (no sales from liquor stores), New Mexico (no sales until 12 p.m.), New York (no package liquor sales between 3 a.m. and 9 a.m., with many local variations) and West Virginia (no alcohol sales before 1 p.m.)
Interestingly, other states continue to limit other commercial activity, and a handful, including Colorado, Indiana, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois, have even prohibited car dealership sales on Sundays. http://www.todayifoundout.com/index.php/2014/12/blue-laws-come/

Who will be the advocates of the imaginary National Sunday Law……the LGBTs, the Atheists, the Feminists, the anti-government Militia, the Charismatics, the Baptists, the 1%, or the 99% who are attempting to eke out a living?

Perhaps it will be the Catholics who have many members in Congress.

I’m sure they will have no trouble passing such an unconstitutional law considering the resounding success they have displayed by sitting on their hands for the past several years while the country is on the verge of economic collapse.

No doubt a National Sunday Law will jump to the top of their 'To Do List' when introduced.

A great many Adventists, regardless of the official pronouncements of the church hierarchy, consider "the Spirit of Prophecy" to be an infallible authority in which there is no error.
This belief is at the heart of the Ellen G. White problem. If her writings are divinely inspired, how then to account for such things, to name one of many possible instances, as the deletion of visionary material upholding the Shut Door teaching from the official canon of her works and her repeated denials of having ever held such a view? Then there are the troubling instances in which she was simply wrong, as in her infamous declaration that "if there was one sin above another which called for the destruction of the race by the flood, it was the base crime of amalgamation of man and beast . . . (which produced) the confused species which God did not create,"(38) or her claim that virtually every physical malady can be traced to masturbation which is caused by eating meat and other "stimulating" foods?(39) One response to this problem, unfortunately one followed from an early date on, was to simply delete the troublesome statements from later editions of her works. When the deleted material has been subsequently discovered and questioned, the White Estate's (the legal entity which controls her writings and official legacy) standard response has been to issue a confusing statement to the effect that Sister White did really not mean to say what she seems to have said.(40) These official pronouncements evidently provide sufficient reassurance for the many Adventists who would never think of questioning White's writings in the first place, but they leave a lot of other people less than satisfied…………………..

In 1976 Ronald Numbers' Prophetess of Health: A Study of Ellen G. White was published. While Numbers actually took a rather conservative stance in a scholarly discussion of the historical and social context of White's work, he clearly demonstrated that much of her "health message" was derived without credit from other health reformers. The Adventist Church did its best to block the book, and by the time it was published Numbers had been dismissed from his position on the faculty of Loma Linda University, the flagship of the Adventist educational establishment. (43)

If Prophetess of Health shook up Adventism, the 1982 publication of Walter Rea's The White Lie (44) came like an earthquake. Through the years, Ellen White had frequently been accused of plagiarism. Just as frequently the accusations were denied to the satisfaction of most Adventists. Rea was a well established Adventist minister and self described devotee of White. In the course of graduate work at a non-Adventist university, much to his discomfort he discovered a number of uncanny parallels between the works of other nineteenth century religious writers and White's writings. His attempts to bring the results of his research to the attention of General Conference officials were repeatedly met with statements that more study was needed before the issue could be publicly discussed. Rea, however, refused to keep silent. After an article on the controversy appeared in the Los Angeles Times, he was relieved of his position as an Adventist minister. http://jimmoyers.com/spirituality/egw.html

There is something I noticed
Revelation 1:9 (KJV)
I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ

John had been banished to Patmos for the TESTIMONY OF JESUS.
This tells me;
1. TESTIMONY OF JESUS was something the apostle and the first century believers possessed
2. Back then, there was immense Christian persecution and it appears TESTIMONY OF JESUS is Christian Faith, that Jesus is the Messiah, risen from the death

These texts explain perfectly that the Spirit of Prophecy is the Testimony of Jesus - and that prophecy is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit such that the Angel claims to be among those that has the Testimony of Jesus - the Spirit of prophecy and "OF your brethren the prophets".

If the question is -- what is that gift of Prophecy --

The Bible does answer it. God gives them direct messages -

Numbers 12
6 And HE said, Hear now My Words: If there be a prophet among you, I the Lord will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream.

And "obviously" Ellen White claimed direct messages from God via visions and dreams.

22 Therefore tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophesying is not for unbelievers but for those who believe

There is a response I had shared with One Baptist. Let me repeat it.
Revelation 19:10 (KJV)
And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

Here the angel is a fellow of;
1. John
2. His brethren who have the testimony of Jesus
Revelation 22:9 (KJV)
Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God

Here the angel is a fellow of;
1. John
2. His brethren the prophets
3. Them who keep the sayings of the book

So we have three distinct groups here with the last being those who keep the sayings. It is absurd to claim that the John and his brethren don't keep the sayings because this is ONLY said of the third group

The angel is simply saying 'am a servant just like you are as a believer, a prophet', anything else is reading into the text. And no, the angel never claimed to have the testimony of Jesus any more than he claimed to be keeping the sayings of the book.

Now, can you quickly summarize what you just said by answering this,

Are prophets the ONLY class possessing the testimony of Jesus?

Somewhat convoluted vooks -- too convoluted for me - I prefer the Bible where there is no such thing as "those who are prophets do not keep the sayings of this book" in the actual text.

The question is not "how many groups of people are there in the Bible"

The question is "what is the Spirit of prophecy" --

17 Then the dragon became furious with the woman and went off to make war on the rest of her offspring, on those who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus.

Revelation 19:10 (ESV)
10 Then I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God.” For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

I am going with the Bible on this one - if you want to come up with your own definition for 'The Testimony of Jesus" -- write a book - let us know -- see if anyone quotes you.

or else - address the texts posted.

Meanwhile - back to the actual Bible.

1 Cor 12 - the gift of prophecy is one of the gifts of the Spirit.

And that gift to the body ceased after the canon of scriptures, as there was no more need to confirm apostolic teachings after that happened, and the office of One ceased with John passing, as there has been NO additional revelation from God since Revelation!
