Have you ever been guilty of a Spoonerism? Once I heard a preacher declare that we ought to "Flee also lustful youths." Good advice indeed, but not quite what the Bible says! [IMG]

I was preaching through a series on the Ten Commands--on the command to keep the Sabbath holy--I was preaching on the importance of rest on that day--and said something to the effect--"God says it crystal clear--we are to rest our ass on the Sabbath!" Just one of those little diddy's that everybody catches--my, my! I'm glad my folks have a big heart for their fallable preacher and also a marvelous sense of humor!

    Brother or Sister Moderator!

Please don't edit that little diddy--I really meant to say that Israel was suppose to give their livestock a rest, too! I wanted to say that they were to give their donkeys and mules a rest--and it just came out that way!

The Rev'd William Archibald Spooner (1844-1930) was an Anglican clergyman and educationist, dean and warden of New College, Oxford.

He was very nervous and had poor vision, which led him to say such things as: A half-warmed fish instead of a half-formed wish.

His affliction attracted hundred's of people to hear hi preach. Hence the term Spoonerisms.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Preached 2 weeks ago from Phil 2 and "bowels of mercy" came up (in the KJV) so was talking about how we think of the HEART as seat of emotion and other cultures thought of the INTESTINES. Had some funny lines.

Later in my closing prayer I shared my thankfulness to God for my church and that I loved them "from the heart of my bottom". I kid you not.

Just thought of another one. I pastor friend of mine was once witnessing to a lady and trying to impress upon her the urgency of trusting Christ. He said "You know, we don't know it, but you could die of a haemorrhoid on the brain at any moment." Of course he meant haemorrhage! [IMG]

Long time ago, as the invitation played softly, the pastor asked us to quietly stand "to our heads with our feet bowed".

and then there was the preacher who got two words mixed up in his introduction that completely changed the nature of the service.

He meant to say, "Turn in your Bibles to 2 Peter while I pull out my glasses." Instead he got two key words mixed up ... you figure it out. [IMG] :D

The other day I was watching a taped serman, and the man said that Jesus's sermans kept people hellbound. He meant spellbound.

And that Jesus went about healing the dead, casting out the sick and raising the devil!

Say, I've done some of that . . .
