Considering the cold and icy weather we been having here, anything to do with spring sounds great to me.

 

come on down and we'll visit the spring training sites. What better way to spend a vacation!

 

When I think about the start of MLB season, I have the song " Centerfield" go through my head.

I think Reds' P and C report this weekend and the position players report on Tues/Wed. I'm excited and will be even more happy when the Reds shore up their starting rotation. That should occur sometime around July 4.....of 2009 :laugh:

My friend and I will go to wtach Tigers game in Lakeland on Saturday March 1.

I predict Tigers will win 100 games this season, and win division this year.

About this time of year, I start getting excited... baseball is on the way!

As a life-long Cubs fan, I can only hope that this year, the 100-year anniversary of our last World Series, will be THE year!

However, being a Cubs fan, I am also realistic... I'm just shooting for a repeat Central title! From early indications, the NL Central looks to be wide open...

That is Dusty Baker in the quote. In defense of Dusty, I think what he is trying to say is that sometimes it is better to get a big hit than to merely draw a walk. If there is a guy on 2nd and 3rd, I would rather my big slugger get a 2-run single than to draw a walk in that situation. Wouldn't you?

 

Yeah, it's Dusty. "Clogging up the basepaths" gives it away.

I don't think that's what he's trying to say, but I admit that I'm not really sure what he's trying to say, because what he actually said doesn't make any sense.

I don't understand how you can be "big" on scoring runs and driving them in, but down on "clogging up the bases" with men who will score the runs by providing an opportunity for others to drive them in. Is there another way to score runs I don't know about? Maybe what Dusty really wants is to have a team of guys who do nothing but hit solo home runs.

 

I think there is such a thing as clogging up the bases. In my situation above, if the slugger walks and never gets that 2-run single and the next guy gets out (or hits into a DP), then the guy who walked merely clogged up the bases with no runs to show for, but his OBP sure looks sweet!

Actually, I hope (out of pure pity for friends who are Cubs fans) that they win something next year. I think the curse of the goat has been so sucessful that it deserves a 100-year run (or is it a limp?) to its (at least partial) credit. :thumbs:

 

Let's give these sluggers names. Let's call them Ken Griffey Jr and Adam Dunn.

I agree that Griffey drawing a walk, then watching in horror as Dunn hits into an inning-ending DP is a terrible thing. Adam Dunn hitting into double-plays brings many tears and much sadness to Reds fans everywhere. What a jerk he is for doing that. Shame on you, Adam Dunn!

But, the biggest jerk of all here is Griffey. I mean, come on! He shouldn't have been trying to draw a walk in the first place! I mean, seriously, what kind of a jerk draws a walk to try and get himself a sweet OBP when he knows that the guy behind him is just going to hit into a DP?

Right you are, Andy. Who needs guys like Griffey clogging up the basepaths when there are guys like Dunn that hit into doubleplays?

So, Griff should always try to get a hit instead of clogging up the basepaths. And if he makes an out instead of walking and Dunn hits a bases-clearing double, and the Reds only score 2 instead of the 3 they could have scored if Griff had clogged up the bases with a walk, and the Reds lose 3-2 in 10 innings because Jose Reyes hit a solo homer in the 10th, at least Griff will have the satisfaction of knowing that he's not a baseclogger.
