Spurgeon vs. Hyper-Calvinism

    Spurgeon fought against the heresy of Hyper-Calvinism. So did the "Father of Modern Missions," William Carey (with the help of Andrew Fuller - the "Theologian of Modern Missions"). They all held to the need to proclaim the Gospel to all, and that all have the "duty" to place faith in Christ alone for salvation and to repent of their sins. They all held to the free offer of the Gospel. They all fought against Hyper-Calvinism, not with Arminianism, but with the doctrines of grace.

    Were these men of God, or heretics?

    I hope that no one will doubt where I stand - these were godly men who proclaimed the free offer of the Gospel as they had been commanded (and as we have been commanded) to do.

    Brother Spurgeon was a Calvinist. However, he took the position enunciated by a Ulster Presbyterian:
    He did not take the position of a local radio broadcaster. Who when asked on a call in program:

    Rev. G, I think it would be helpful to this discussion if you would define how you are using the terms "hyper-Calvinism" and "duty faith". Thanks.

    Also, to all as we progress with this thread: Let's try to keep this to an historical discussion of Spurgeon vs. Hyper-Calvinism and not digress into just a theological debate of hyper-Calvinism, etc. We have the Calvinism/Arminianism Debate forum for that. Nothing wrong thus far, just trying to head the possibility of getting way off of Rev. G's topic. Thanks.

    "Hyper-Calvinism" - The belief that God's sovereignty (including election) negates human responsbility, therefore evangelism and missions are unnecessary activitities.

    "Duty Faith" - It is the duty of all people in all places to put their faith in Christ; all people are commanded to place their faith in Christ alone for salvation. Hyper-Calvinism denies this.
