These quotes compliments of spurgeon.us the largest Spurgeon quote repository in the world.

"The doctrines of original sin, election, effectual calling, final perseverance, and all those great truths which are called Calvinism—though Calvin was not the author of them, but simply an able writer and preacher upon the subject—are, I believe, the essential doctrines of the Gospel that is in Jesus Christ. Now, I do not ask you whether you believe all this—it is possible you may not; but I believe you will before you enter heaven. I am persuaded, that as God may have washed your hearts, he will wash your brains before you enter heaven."

"Speaking of Arminians, Whitfield said, “We are all born Arminians.” It is grace that turns us into Calvinists, grace that makes Christians of us, grace that makes us free, and makes us know our standing in Christ Jesus."

"I believe nothing merely because Calvin taught it, but because I have found his teaching in the Word of God."

"They are all Calvinists there, every soul of them. They may have been Arminians on earth; thousands and millions of them were; but they are not after they get there, for here is their song, “Salvation unto our God, which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb.”"

"The basis and groundwork of Arminian theology lies in attaching undue importance to man, and giving God rather the second place than the first."

"I believe that very much of current Arminianism is simply ignorance of gospel doctrine; and if people began to study their Bibles, and to take the Word of God as they find it, they must inevitably, if believers, rise up to rejoice in the doctrines of grace."

"I believe the man who is not willing to submit to the electing love and sovereign grace of God, has great reason to question whether he is a Christian at all, for the spirit that kicks against that is the spirit of the devil, and the spirit of the unhumbled, unrenewed heart."

"Our Arminian antagonists always leave the fallen angels out of the question: for it is not convenient to them to recollect this ancient instance of Election. They call it unjust, that God should choose one man and not another. By what reasoning can this be unjust when they will admit that it was righteous enough in God to choose one
race—the race of men, and leave another race—the race of angels, to be sunk into misery on account of sin."

"To this day, men cannot bear that doctrine. Free will suits them very well, but free grace does not. They would not let Christ choose his own wife; I say it with the utmost reverence."

"I believe the doctrine of election, because I am quite sure that if God had not chosen me I should never have chosen him; and I am sure he chose me before I was born, or else he never would have chosen me afterwards; and he must have elected me for reasons unknown to me, for I never could find any reason in myself why he should have looked upon me with special love."

"How is it that some of us who were once drunkards, swearers, and the like, are now sitting here to praise the God of Israel this day? Was there anything good in us that moved the heart of God to save us? God forbid that we should indulge the blasphemous thought."

I have a 15 volume set of Spurgeon's sermons [plus some small topical volumes] and had read some of this before, particulatly the first paragraph. However, I had been unable to find it and it is a real pleasure to read these wonderful words again. Spurgeon so clearly shows the love of God in the Doctrine of His Sovereignty in Salvation. I particularly like the following paragraph because it expresses my beliefs so well:

"I believe the doctrine of election, because I am quite sure that if God had not chosen me I should never have chosen him; and I am sure he chose me before I was born, or else he never would have chosen me afterwards; and he must have elected me for reasons unknown to me, for I never could find any reason in myself why he should have looked upon me with special love."

Then you deny that God made us in HIS image. God surely has greater regard for his own image than to overlook those he created in it!

Have we measured up to God's standard? NO! God is Holy, We sinned and became unholy, but we do remain in the image of God. Therefore God shows us his Grace and allows us to hear his word and believe unto our Salvation from the second death.

Don't make a big deal of it friends, but God does see each and every human as redeemable, and that is why He gave his only begotten son to pay the penalty for sin, so that through our faith in Him, we can have everlasting life. He does not choose who will and who won't, he lets us do that! God says, "I have set before you life and death, CHOOSE LIFE". He was not speaking to those on whom he marked with indelible ink the word "ELECT". He said that to whosoever hears the word, and believes! That is, any ONE out of all who believes. You want to talk about the doctrines of Grace? You cannot get more Grace out of God than to allow every human being who wants to believe through hearing his word and thereby be saved. But how will they hear but he send a preacher?

Give us a break Calvinist's, There is no such thing as "general election"! God's grace is for ALL mankind. Yes, there is Specific Election, and none of you are included. The notables in that class include Noah, Abraham, Isaac, etc., and THE APOSTLES, and Yes, even the POPE!

Gratitude? every breath I take in is taken in in Gratitude to my lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. If he had not paid the penalty for ALL sin, I would not be a believer today! Since he did, I am convinced that I have everlasting life, and when I depart this corrupt body of flesh, I enter Everlasting life with Jesus, bypassing judgment just as He promised me I would for believing in Him.

    Hi Whetstone;
as far as truth Spurgeon's words. They mean absolutley nothing when Compared to God's words.
Just another Calvinist who thought he knew the truth and didn't.

what's to prove? Prove what wrong? Does wrongness need to be proven? Wrongness shows itself very evidently by it's wrongness. :D Only rightness need be proven.

    Brother Wes,

YOU SAID: If he had not paid the penalty for ALL sin, I would not be a believer today!

ME: Truly Christ did pay the penalty for ALL sin for his elect children (this includes in my opinion you!) My question to you is, do you also believe he paid penalty for ALL sin for those who are and forever shall be the children of the devil? If so, how could God rightly punish them for their sin in Hell if he already paid for all of their sin on the cross?

    Brother Joe

Joe you rightly assess the dilemma of the arminian. You have sin in two places- on the cross and on sinners in hell. what does God say about sin and punishment?

    Deuteronomy 24:16
The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers: every man shall be put to death for his own sin.

In the anti-Calvinist gospel every man is put to death for sin that's already been paid for. what blasphemy!

You know? I tried turning to Christ MYSELF. Tried it many times. Didn't work . . . And I always had many doubts. But then Christ opened my eyes. He transformed me. [IMG]

Isn't it a secure feeling that the one who trust in doesn't waiver! That is soveriegn! That He has done it ALL for you and did not "leave it up to you"? What a great assurance knowing that the God of the universe has "stamped" you with His Holy Spirit and keeps you forever!

What assurance when you don't know if you're elect?

My dad once said, if you're worried that you might not be elect, you probably are elect.

(Basically, if you understand what it means, you don't have much to worry about.)

I may equally ask: how do you have assurance in your decision for Christ? Maybe you really didn't mean it?

At least when you're eyes are on the cross there is no wavering.

Dan thats the sad thing. Their point of view doesn't allow wiggle room for assurance as they are putting their faith in the hope that their continued faith will keep them. We put our God given faith in God and God sanctifies and keeps us. If my continued salvation was dependant on my ability to conjur up faith on my own, I'd be in big trouble.
