Start studying for Sunday?

    This was one of the forums that bit the dust from the transfer from the old one.

    When do you start studying for this Sunday's sermon? There is a larger, growing body of people making modern cases for "sermon simmering," starting your homiletical prep work farther in advance than normal. I'd love to hear your practice.

    This assumes you've pre-planned your series or text/topic in advance and you know where you're going already. Don't include the time where you frantically search for something to preach on [​IMG]

    Thankfully, I'm a lectionary preacher, so no frantic hunting for me.

    I generally start work on a Sunday sermon on the Tuesday prior. My friend and hero Paul Duke starts about a month out, letting the texts simmer as they may - but he's a better preacher than I am.

    Wednesday night stuff I do topically (a month on Revelation, etc.) so that's usually percolating throughout the time I'm working on it.

    Incidentally, Fred Craddock will be lecturing to practicing pastors for a day at Carson Newman College in Jefferson City, TN in October. Should be interesting :cool:

    Early on in mnistry, I did well to have my Sundays sermons ready, Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. Wednesday's message was ready by Tuesday...or Wednesday morning.
    After a few years, I learned to get things ready a few days in advance, but I never caught on to writing sermons a week or a month in advance.
    I must say, I was a midnight student...never got into the books until after midnight. Must also say, I never wrote my sermons out in full. Just serviceable outlines. Maybe it is the English gift of the gab, and the fact I had to look the people in the eyes when I preached. Hard to do that when one is tied to notes.
    Every sermon is safely filed away and dated, cross-referenced and never preached again,,,total is resting at 8,736.

    At this time, I usually begin on Monday evening.
    Since I'm preaching through Romans (with occasional interruptions to deal with pressing issues) I have a lot of time to look back upon as I spent about 2 years in the study of Romans in adittion to my regular studies. I usually try to study a book on my Wed. night service and go verse by verse with it. I normally spend more time preparing for Sundays, though.
