Stealing?? Burning Cd's

I was at home this weekend and I saw that I have like 4 Cd's that were given to me. Now these 4 cd's we burned on cd-rom and it included some of the great hits of today.... Now I am sure those artists who made those Awesome Songs...intended for the material to be sold on stores to be able to earn their money... Are we stealing everytime we burn a CD or received a CD from a person?


Sure there are sites where you can legally download music....but is burning CD's stealing... just like if you went to blockbuster and you burned the movie and saved it on your computer...thats stealing then why burning Cd's is not??

If downloading is legal, then it is not illegal uinless you sell the burned cd. I believe you are allowed to have a copy for yourself, but I am not sure if that is true for downloaded music. Although I don't see a lot of difference in burning a personal copy and having it on your computer, now you take it with you to listen too.

With iTunes the music you download is yours to do with as you please except resell it. I keep a backup on cd plus i have the music on my office computer and home computer. Now receiving for free, music from a friend is technically legal because you did not pay for it, at the same time it is technically illegal because the copy they made was not for their own personal use.

Frankly, I don't see a lot of difference between illicitly downloading a movie or music and checking it out from the library. I don't actually download illegally, but I don't see the difference.

I also don't see much difference between sharing a CD and sharing a book or magazine.

Yeah... I feel you !!!!!!!!!!! but how about if you buy a new CD at the store and you make copies and share them with your friends... thats illegal.. is that stealing.. ?

I don't know about now, but a few years ago a lawyer friend of ours said you can make copies of tapes (cd's now I guess) for your personal use, and if you shared it, as long as you don't charge for it.

If you copy a CD that you did not buy for your use, you are preventing the artist who recorded the CD from getting the royalties they would normally recieve for the sale. It may be only pennies, but it is rightfully their pennies. Best I can figure, that's stealing. You have stolen their royalty money.

Whether or not you get caught isn't (or shouldn't be) the issue. Giving it away for free isn't the issue. For every copy you give away, that is a copy that the artist doesn't get his pay.

As a person who deals in copyright for a living it is illegal for you to purchase a CD then copy it and give it away to friends.

Now you can purchase a copy of the CD and then give that purchased copy to your friends and then you are left with nothing until they give it back, but by law you have no rights to copy a CD/DVD/Movie and keep the original for yourself and give a copy to a friend.

The same goes for purchased software. And in my case photographs. If you purchase a photo from a photographer or Sears/JC Penny, etc. and then go out and make copies of that photo you have broken the copyright law. And it is considered stealing.

Although, because of the way record companies treat the artists, there are several bands that have come forward and asked people to download illegally, then send them $.50 so they would get more money.

Too bad they can't set up their own sites to download from. People would sure buy at that price.

Under the license I agree to when I download songs, I am allowed to make 8 copys of the song...

for my own personal use.

Yeah how many of those loans do you think actually make it back to the original owner and without the borrower making a copy themselves? That's awfully shaky ground at best, but if you can do it with a clean conscious by all means.

If you were an artist and you composed great Christian music for the Glory of God. You would expect for other Christians to go and purchase your CD not burn it and lend it or give it away because that would be stealing.... it cost you alot of money for the Album to be composed and all of sudden CHRISTIANS.. are making copies and handing them out.. or letting other borrow.. which when they borrow they also burn it..

Thats stealing...

We cant.. say ohh..its just a litle sin.. Stealing is Stealing.. no matter how we paint it.. right?

I was responding to J Jump saying you could give away the original and also someone else said it was legal for you to make copies of the orginal before giving it away. So, it legal to make copies for yourself and then its legal to give away the orginal, then the copies belong to you so why can't you do what you want with them. People always justify what they want to do is what I am saying.

Also, Mr goody two shoes on taxes. I have no choice to pay what I owe for I get 1099s for all that I own.

I think that would be the same thing. The person you give it to could do that and so on and so on until the original wore out from being copied.
