She worked for liberals. Dr. Mudd was hanged for setting a total stranger's broken leg. They wanted to show her how mean they are.
According to Wiki - Dr Mudd spent just a few years in prison until his pardon. In addition, Mudd apparently did know Booth.
Though I did agree that the authorities did want to make an example.

Sounds like she is helping with his defense and believes in his innocence. It will be interesting to see how it pans out. Some hope she is able to successfully sue. From the article:
