Stephen Hawking makes it clear: There is no God

His atheism doesn't cloud the fact that he is one of the most brilliant minds of our generations.
He would've been a better role model for our younger generations of aspiring scientists if he were a believer, though, but God has plans for people like him in His economy too, which I am sure, will redound to His glory, maybe not in our time, but in God's own.

As a relatively young man, the brilliant atheist demonstrated that the physical universe had a beginning. Then, when folks realized that reality actually pointed to a force outside of the physical realm, beyond our understanding, he has been trying for the rest of his life to undo his finding. But at the end of the day, his subsequent speculations have been dismissed as metaphysics.

The second paragraph of the article says "Believe in science, believe in God" since that covers both bases and gives you the best chance for a cheery afterlife. Just proof that the author has no knowledge of God or salvation. We are not saved because we are "covering out bases," we are saved because Christ died for us.

Also:
Hawking now explained: "What I meant by 'we would know the mind of God' is, we would know everything that God would know, if there were a God. Which there isn't. I'm an atheist."

Hawking simply parrots the typical atheistic smugness. He doesn't offer proof of the nonexistence of God; he just says there is no God because he is an atheist. It's a very elitist attitude, but not surprising at all.
