It looks like adults and teenagers in schools are going to have to start treating these situations the same way that passengers on airliners now would handle a hijacking situation. They can't assume that it will end non-violently. They will have to take on the intruder as they will have to assume that he will shoot people anyway.

It is disgusting when children are victimized by adults.

If you check with your school district, you'll probably find that the teachers have been trained, that there are passwords for communication, and that there are plans for various contingencies.

Not very emotional, but much safer for the kids.

As a security trained professional . . . I would never tell the world what security measures they should plan on defeating before their attack . . .

Then again, I am not emotionally involved.

One year, we had a kiddo who made a "list" of kds she was going to "take care of." Someone got wind of it, and even though the police went to her house, searched it, and kept her in the house for the day, some kids called a television station and said that she was roaming the halls of the school with a rifle.

Over a hundred people rushed to the school to get their kids out, when the local station aired the report (without bothering to call the school to confirm) and it was quite a circus.

Anyway, parents were incensed when they discovered that there was a secret code teachers were to respond to in different emergencies, but no one else knew it. The administration tried to explain that if it was common knowledge, it would no longer be useful to protect their kids. Most went away angry anyway.

As they say, emotions often overrule common sense.

Just to be clear - I cannot confirm or deny that 'they' could make the cut for the interview process for the 'Unit' that is represented (almost) in the TV show 'The Unit'.

Such a sad situation. Teachers ought to be allowed to carry a concealed weapon.

IMHO. A tazer yes, concealed weapon . . . never.

The average person freezes in a stressful situation. The average person (even with training) cannot use a real weapon, they freeze up when they have to try to use one. I was a range NCO for most of the qualification ranges my units conducted while in the Army.

Give them training, but don't add the greater risk of an accidental weapon's discharge - we lost some that way during training.

    IMHO.

Teachers are trained to respond in certain ways to crisis situations.

And, yes, we have "codes" to give each other orally, manually, and over the intercom. The cafeteria workers have a back door that they can escape and go for help if necessary. We practice "lock-down" a couple of times a year.

The children take the practice very seriously, and we allow them to help us decide the best "hiding places" in the room. They feel "empowered" when the principal comes by after the drill and says, "Very good, boys and girls, I couldn't see anybody through the windows and I couldn't hear anyone through the doors."

They feel safer knowing that they have a plan, that the teachers have a plan, and that they are to some degree in charge of their own safety by being very still and very quiet.

To be honest, the tornado drills frighten them much more.

No plan is perfect, but to have no plan at all is a plan for disaster.

I am so very sorry for all of these tragic events. The best thing that we can do as a groups of internet brothers and sisters is to pray for the families and pray for peace.

John Donvan (ABC news - nightline) just asked what we should all be asking: When will it be enough. He said this as his voice cracked from the evident pain that he experienced from this tragedy.

I pray that if our God is judging us through the evil actions of evil men - that we His people will turn our faces towards Heaven and beg His forgiveness.

We dont have a code system. We are a small private school, and if someone is going to have a pistol and be using it, then I would rather have one too.

Amen Scarlett O. It is such a tragedy! You cannot even begin to fathom what their families must be going through. It makes you realize just how much you should not let petty stuff interfere with loved one's. To take extra care, caution, and love with your children.

May Gods comforting hand be upon them.:praying:

    Take care, Ralph

Remember the show lean on me? Maybe the principle had the right idea, chain the doors shut and lock the school down.

Chaining the doors is criminal. You have a fire, and you'll kill scores of children. And fires are a lot more common than shootings.

And I'm not exaggerating about it being criminal. People have gone to prison for doing that, after fires in which others were needlessly burned to death.

How quickly we do forget . . . and, with the evil that is being perpetrated in our country today, the risk that an evil man, woman, or child would fire-bomb a school is too great of a risk.

I can remember when we went to school with guns in the racks (often loaded) and no one needed to feel threatened . . .

What is tragic is the Amish don't carry weapons. They don't watch TV or listen to radios. They don't have electricity. They don't have computers. They still drive horses and buggies. Their kids don't play video games. They are farmers who build their own houses and barns and grow their own food, make their own butter and cheese, and still speak Old English with thees and thous, and educate their own children. They keep to themselves, a quiet and plain people who harm no one and just try to live for God. This was a little one-room school and there are many of them scattered throughout Pennsylvania and Ohio and other parts of the country where the Amish communities are located. If the genteel and obscure Amish people are not safe in America, then no one is. This is truly a tragedy and I hope we will be praying for them. Not only did some beast snuff out the lives of these little girls and possibly more will die yet, their whole world was turned upside down by such a police (helicopters, etc.) presence and news media. My heart breaks for them, their grief, the intrusion upon their way of life, and their loss. May God grant them His peace.:tear:

I doubt if they think it's tragic that they weren't armed. They put their faith in God, not Smith and Wesson.

They know tragedy, and they know it will happen again. Their faith sustains them. May God give them peace and hope in spite of this terrible event.
