Honestly, I think one of the best out there right now is the ESV Study Bible. Just be prepared to have a hand truck to carry it. :)

    King James Study Bible (Nelson)

    NKJV Study Bible (Nelson)

    Zondervan King James Study Bible

    Zondervan NASB Study Bible

(I don't agree with ALL the notes in each one, but they are excellent study bibles)

I like the ESV study Bible, also. If you add legs to it it also will make a nice end table :)

Although I disagree with his Lordship Salvation, the MacArthur study Bibles are also good. He is gifted in the historical context and discerning what should be literal as opposed to figurative.

The HCSB apologetics study Bible is also good I hear, even though I have yet to get it.

It's really good for apologetic material, but don't buy it in the place of a comprehensive study bible.

    Ryrie is lacking in notes.

    Thompson Chain is good.

I almost forgot the NET study Bible. A guy has it in my church, and I swear there might be one paragraph of Scripture on each page with the rest various study notes that cover many views.

What do you mean by apologetic material? I was under the impression all study Bibles were apologetic :)(

I'd heartily recommend the NET Bible (available in electronic form at bible.org) with its HUGE amount of notes. Also Thompson Chain Reference.

Personally I'm not a big fan of study Bibles. If you must get one maybe MacArthur is a good place to start...or Scofield. :)

I have one called the Believer's Study Bible, edited by WA Criswell. It was reprinted as the Baptist Study Bible, both of which are now out of print. The notes are still available on some Bible software programs. Good stuff, in my humble (but accurate) opinion.

The notes and articles are heavily focused on defending Christianity against alternative worldviews. You won't find as much historical, archaeological, and other materials in the ASB. Some material is there, but it is generally in a context of apologetic argument (which is something you would expect, given the name). If you are looking more for a comprehensive study Bible with a wide range of material, the ASB isn't the best option.

Thanks for the feedback. Sounds like an interesting read, and considering I like the HCSB may pick it up.

I agree. This SB was also marketed as the Criswell Study Bible. Copies of the Believers SB are available on the used book market. It is a good study Bible.

To add more to a previous post, the King James Study Bible, as Amy correctly said was once called the Liberty (univ) Study Bible. The NKJB SB is different from the King James and I really don't know why this Bible (NKJB SB) isn't more popular.

My personal favorite is the MacArthur. I bought a copy of the ESV SB the day it was released, flopped through it and haven't opened it since. I have Ryrie and Scofield in 3 or 4 editions each, the NIV SB which is good and the first SB I ever owned, Thompson, Reformation, numerous others to choose from but the first one I take down is MacArthur and for most of my study time and to carry to church I use a reference edition of NKJB, NIV and NASB.

My attitude is look around for good used copies and buy them all. I have several that are collector grade and a few that are just hard to find.

The Holman Christian Standard Study Bible is really good. The NKJV Thompson Chain Reference Bible is also a very good choice.
