Summer camp

I never went to camp as a kid.

But after I got married, I began participating in our church association youth camp as a counselor.

I have directed one before, and our association meets this Thursday, and one of the things we are looking for is an association youth director, and Youth camp director for this June.... The one we had resigned last month. (He is a Pastor, and was called to another church out of our association.)

Word is they are looking at me for director... I don't know if I want to.
So THANKS for opening this discussion up....

Is God trying to tell me something?

If He calls me to, I will... but I want to make sure God wants me to.
Each child last yr was charged $56 (If I remember right) But most churches covered each child's cost, plus more.

Each church takes up a responsibility like providing crafts, snacks for certain days, games, etc.

 

Our state association owns one, but we also have one here locally.
I have never participated in our State's camp, but have in local associations. It is the one thing I look forward to in Summer.

 

Last year, Brent went to church camp in Iowa. I believe it was around $100.00 for a week. Not bad for lodging and food.

He also went to "Little Galilee" about an hour from here, but got sick 1/2 way through and had to be picked up early. The cost for that was $100.00 also.

My kids always went to Triple § Christian Ranch, in Rosebud, AR, run by John Bishop and his "My Kathy".

I'm hoping that Brent gets to go there this summer. It depends on what the church decides.

He also wants to attend a Boy Scout camp, but it depends on the cost. They are much higher than the church camps.

I was a Catholic growing up, so I did not attend church camps - too frivolous. :BangHead:

 

When I was between 3rd grad and 6th grade my parents sent me to week long summer camps each summer. A christian campground in Northern CA called Pilot Lake. Oh I loved it more than anything else! Up in the mountains, a lake to swim in, campfires.....everything. Just loved it! I don't remember how much it cost though.

When I was a young teen I went to a teen camp at Camp Emmanuel, in central CA, near Paso Robles, about an hour and a half from where I lived. Absolutely loved that too! There were 8 of us campers that week, and we had a total blast! After that year I went and helped out each summer at that same campground. It was run by a board from what I can remember, I think perhaps Child Evangelism Fellowship? Something like that. When it was changed to new hands I went right along with the campground.

The last two or three years before I went to college, and one summer after I started college, I spent all or almost all of my summers there at the campground....including some weekends.....working the kitchen and being a counselor some weeks. We had Developementally Disabled weeks, which I worked as a counselor in, and which changed my life. This Christian camp experience for me was life-altering. I work with the mentally handicapped because of those summers. I think that also I avoided alot of heartache and trials because I was kept busy at camp working instead of being left to my own self at home all summer.

For me, I consider my camp to be one of the most special places on earth, because it is where I really learned to connect with God and listen to His leading.

 

Yes, if my church sent a group to summer camp my oldest three would be going! We hosted a bus kid's camp for a couple years in Minnesota, and my husband and I went as workers, taking all of our kids with us. We only had three and then four at that time. But they loved that too!

We typically have functions at Camp Joy, about an hour and a half or so from here in Milwaukee. But for now our church has not been sending our kids anywhere to camp. Id be very hesitant to send my kids on their own to any camp. I don't think Id send them unless it was with our church group, and/or being run by our church or a church we or my pastor knew well.

 

==No. Though my parents did require us to attend Vacation Bible school at our Methodist Church when we were little. I still remember how much I hated it.

==No. We lived, and I still do, at a vacation resort. All of my friends were there and we looked forward to a summer of swimming, skiing, and other things. Taking us away from that would have been, well, cruel.

==I don't have any children but, if I did, it would depend upon whether they wanted to attend or not. I do have a dog but I don't think he is interested in summer camp. He suffers from mild seperation anxiety. Go figure...

I went to Girl Scout camp, which was very nice. Also Episcopal church camp, which was not very good for my spiritual growth.

My kids went to a Friends camp which was okay and Awana camp where the boys were threatened and subjected to verbal abuse by other campers... they just happened to have a weak counselor who wasn't on top of things. At another Awana camp my daughter sat under some first rate preaching.
