Sunday morning Book studies in the OT

I'm currently preaching through Nehemiah during Sunday mornings, and God planned this one just right seeing how we are facing a time of rebuilding in our church due to the work of a single family that would rather kill this church than to "lose control".
I have also preached a semi-series on Pslams that i called "Finding Hope in the Psalms". I looked at 4 different types of psalms and showed where our hope is found (in praise, suffering, etc).

 

Jonah---God of the Second Chance!

Amos---but be prepared to "sceeeeee-daddle" in the middle of the nite---know what I mean???? An exposition of Amos???? The average church member can't "take it!!" Know what I mean????

 

I have preached through Jonah, Haggai, a series of messages on commitment through the OT, and several messages in Psalms. I am going to be starting a series on Malachi soon, plus hope to go through Deuteronomy.

 

8 months is an awfully long time for a series. I prefer 3 to a max 4. 8 months covers too many interruptions for holidays and what not.

OT in the AM? Let's see, Ruth, Lamentations, Nehemiah, Proverbs...those immediately come to mind in my ministry.

 

I think one needs to take as long as it takes to get through the material and make sure your people know and understand it.

I listen to a pastor that started a study through the Book of Luke over a year ago and he hasn't made it to chapter three yet. And the studies are fantastic! There is so much to learn!

 

All of the historical books make great book studies for the OT. Joshua, Judges, Ruth, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther. Also I did a series on the kings of Judah, which was a good series using either or both Kings and Chronicles. The Minor Prophets are also great for preaching in the OT. I used "Major Truths in the Minor Prophets" as a source for preaching a single message on each book. Of course Genesis is great for preaching as well. All of these studies can be done in a much shorter period of time than suggested above. I Cor. tells us the OT was written for our benefit, so we need to use the OT in our preaching.

 

We are in Exodus right now. We finished Ephesians and have had about 3 or 4 sermons on Exodus. He's covering more verses at a time with Exodus than he did with Ephesians.

J. Ligon Duncan who is the pres of the PCA (or was anyway) - and also a pastor - said at his church that between Sunday morning, Sunday Night and Wednesday night, they will preach the entire Bible every 10 years. So I'm sure he's done a fair share of OT in Sunday AM.

 

I'd be curious about this. 50+ sermons on the first two chapters of Luke? It would depend heavily if the pastor is expository or not (In practice...because most brag they are even though they aren't)

 

CircuitRider is absolutely right. ALL 39 books of the OT should be fair game if handled properly and above all APPLIED to the hearers. This is where most OT preaching fails horribly.
