Sunday School Prerequisites

In our own church? No quarterlies! Bible only, and someone who knows how to do proper bible study, who is willing to put the time into it, and is a good teacher.

 

I am not quite sure what you mean.
Are you looking to attend a different class?
Or are you looking for new curicuulum?

(I base my comments on the assumption that the primary function of Sunday School is Bible study. Outreach and inreach are integral, but secondary.)

Either way, the most important requisite for a good class is a gifted teacher. By that, I mean someone with the spiritual gift of teaching.

Sounds obvious, but in my experience many "teachers" are not so gifted. They are functioning out of a need or shortage rather than in their gifting.

It should also go without saying that the teacher should be orthodox. You might want to question a teacher's theological bent. Their theological bent determines how they intrerpret the Word.

You also want a class that has good inreach. Do folks stay in touch? Do they pray for each other? Do they meet each others needs?

And you want a class with good outreach. Does the class participate in ministries and missions?

Granted, you may not find the answers to these questions until you attend the class for some time. Of course, the same goes for a church.

 

I personally like a Sunday School class that is applicable. I want to know how to use what I've learned all week.
I get bored easy when the teacher just gives a history lesson and teaches what I already learned 20 years ago.
Show me how to apply it to my life this coming week, and you'll keep me in your Sunday School class.

 

What I look for is how the people relate to one another. Do they just attend or are they seeking to do ministry?

 

I prefer Sunday school classes with class participation in it. Alot of classes can be nothing more than a sunday sermon before the sermon and all you do is sit and listen, I prefer to participate.

 

I want a class that applies God's word to today.
I want a class that is conversational with give and take more than sermonizing.
I want a class that encourages fellowship.

The best classes I have attended have had a general assembly in the very beginning, then break up into smaller groups. The small groups offer variety so you can choose what you prefer. For instance, one is "Men only", another is "Women only," another is "whoever wants to join us."
