Supreme Court rejects atheist's appeal over 11-story Illinois cross

The U.S. Supreme Court has rejected a Buffalo Grove atheist's final appeal in his lawsuit challenging the use of state funds to renovate an 11-story cross atop southern Illinois' tallest peak, ending the legal dispute spanning more than two years.

The nation's high court on Tuesday declined without comment to review Robert Sherman's request to hear his case involving the $20,000 grant given in 2008 to the 111-foot-high Bald Knob Cross of Peace near Alto Pass. Lower courts already had ruled that Sherman lacked standing to sue over the grant.

Sherman sued in August 2010, arguing that efforts to repair the cross using state money have "the primary effect of advancing a particular religious sect, namely Christianity." He noted that the grant came from a $5 million pot of money that the state Legislature channeled to the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

I can't decipher what you are trying to say, but are you saying you think taxpayers who do not share a religious viewpoint should be forced by the government to pay for upkeep on a religious shrine for another group?

So-called "illegal" immigrants are human beings who hurt and get sick like anyone. They also work very hard for the most part. And they pay taxes too. This is a bigger problem. As long as you have a third-world economy bordering the USA, there will be people getting here any way they can.

Did you ever read of a case where an atheist sued to begin a new housing development on a "Native American Sacred Site" because any level of government designating it such and prohibiting development is "advancing a particular religion?" No, they and nonchristians and the MP type file their cases like this one or to keep astronauts from reading from the Bible on a government space vehicle. Nor do they sue to legally possess an eagle feather, as only native Americans can possess one, even though the eagle it was plucked from is just as naked.

Because culture is authorized under provisions of Article 1, Section 8 subsectin 8 of the COTUS.
Health care is not a constitional activity of the Federal Govt. (State/commonwealth is a different story)

Stop and think for a minute - would it be better for the US to have a sucessful person come to the States to help the economy or for a poor person come who lives off the govt (ie taxpayer)?
