Supreme Court Rules in Favor of Abortion Protesters

I have a friend who had to put everything she owned in her parents' name so she wouldn't lose it to a racketeering suit. House, car, etc. So she lives with looking like she has no assets. Not good for credit.

 

8-0? How did that happen? Perhaps the court is turning more conservative with Roberts and Scalito on the bench. Who knows?

Maybe it's the pain medicine from my gallbladder attacks, but why 8-0? Where was the ninth vote?

 

Though I agree with the decision, let's not get too carried away here. SCOTUS was not saying that abortion demonstrations can be a free for all. They were simply ruling in regards to the Hobbs Act, saying that it was not intended to apply "freestanding physical violence offense" acts to instances of abortion protestors. Abortion protestors, like anyone who exscercises free speech rights, must still act within the law. They cannot engage in, or incite, violence, and cannot infringe upon the rights of others in the due course of commerce.

In my nearby community, there is the problem of abortion protestors who are constantly trespassing and violating local ordinances (blocking driveways, covering up signeage, and even hanging anti-abortion paraphinalia to lightposts, and on the walls of the clinic they're protesting against), and the local authorities aren't adequately responding to complaints about them (you would think that, if an anti-abortion group is Christian, they would refrain from violating the law so as not to require police action in the first place).

Who in this thread was getting carried away and hoping this decision would allow us to incite violence and free for alls? I think you tend to assume too much negative about your Christian brothers and sisters. I am going to try not to assume this is because of where you live...on the liberal left coast.

It is unfortunate, but true, that there is no shortage of Christians who commit abuses to the detriment of the rest of us. We must not ignore that, for doing so negatively affects our credibility. Thanksfully, those Christians are the minority. Let us endeavor to make sure it stays that way.

Assume not. I live in the conservative OC. Additionally, I find that term offensive. It is unfair, not to mention inaccurate, to judge with a broad brush all of us, just because Los Angeles and San Francisco cry with squeeky wheels.

 

I agree. The assumption that I made about you and where you live was just as unfair as the assumption you made about Christian feelings about this ruling. I apologize.

Alito didn't vote, probably because the case would have been argued with O'Connor still on the bench.

 

Say what you will about the Supreme Court but they do tend to allow free speech. Sometimes to much free speech (pornography) but most of the justices do defend our 1st Amendment.
