I was really surprised when I read this online journals of a young man's experience at the Longview Baptist Temple. I know and am friends with people from the Fundamentalist background so know not all hold this type of totalitarian church/college polity. However, the writing is quite good and the tales can be addictive. Wish it was in book form so I could read it faster.

Wow, this stuff is amazing. I went to Cedarville University and I think that was about as much policing as I could have tolerated. This is ten times worse. Very entertaining, though. I bet he really could publish these.

Brother Dallas, If it is the "Communist" tale, then I cannot say it gets worse from having that stuck up your nose, but the intimidating tactics are common throughout his book (or at least from what I read). I have not read the whole thing. Want to wait for the book to come out.

Petrel, He is in contact with a publisher and I am on the list to purchase the book if it comes out. Yes, his writing style can be entertaining even in such an environment like that.

Is God receiving glory with the book? Edifyies the saints? Contributes to the peace in the body of christ?

If it succeeds in demolishing some hypocritical legalism, then I'd say yes.

And he brought me to the entrance of the court, and when I looked, behold, there was a hole in the wall. Then he said to me, "Son of man, dig in the wall." So I dug in the wall, and behold, there was an entrance. And he said to me, "Go in, and see the vile abominations that they are committing here." So I went in and saw. And there, engraved on the wall all around, was every form of creeping things and loathsome beasts, and all the idols of the house of Israel. (Eze 8:7-10 ESV)

They are entertaining, I'll say that much. I'd sure like to hear the other sides of those stories.

According to the Texas Baptist Underground, one person sought legal action against the book, but, after not being able to disprove anything, he dropped it. I grew up in a similar environment so really can easily accept everything he has written. For me, I was expecting, like Br. Dallas, something worse than the first story, but it was pretty tame after that (for me) but extremely entertaining.

I have found out that Phil Johnson will write the forward to the book and the name of the book needs to be changed because the publisher already has a book by that name. Check out Phil's forward on his Pyromaniac blog

Yes, Brother, it DOES get worse. Many of us who grew up in the IFB movement have been through a lot of the same experiences. Jim Spurgeon is a good man and a friend of mine. When I couldn't get my own IFB pastor here in TN to mail the tapes weekly that I paid for to me because I'm disabled and couldn't be in church, Brother Jim would mail me tapes EVERY WEEK free of charge so I could here preaching! I thank the Lord for him and for his ministry and his printing the Tales from the Temple.

It warns of legalism, just as Christ warned of the leaven of the Pharisees. It helps many know that they weren't/aren't alone in what they've experienced, because someone is writing about it. It shows just how cruel some pastors and churches within this movement can be, have been, and continue to be. I think God is glorified by others being rescued from the lunacy of many in the IFB movement.

Well, let's see, Joman... It is a warning, entertaining reading, and edification all at the same time. I have read the "Tales", and they ring true if scary. They also show that God can work even through bad situations to do good things.

It shows a very ungodly hyper legalism with a "man of God" who is completely out of bounds. It also shows a very ungodly response with no apparent remorse for his disregard of authority in many realms. Spurgeon is no hero, and neither is anyone else in the story. It is a shameful recounting for all sides.

I've read the Tales before. They had been published on FFF. They are excellent. They ring true with what I experienced at HAC, but I must say, I think Gray has out Hylesed-Hyles.
These things need to be told because naive young people, like I was, get sucked up into those movements and become slaves. The best years of my life were stolen from me only to serve the egos of evil men.

[IMG] That was my impression as well. I think if we could read the other side of those stories, more folks would agree.

The thing that speaks to me of its truthfulness is that Spurgeon does not hide that he is not the hero in the tales. He tells it like it is, coloring everyone including himself with the same brush. A person wanting to be less than honest would do differently.
