Just read this thread. If you try to record into your microphone input, it may be somewhat distorted. I've found that a "line in" jack does better. Most sound cards have one.

 

I use a program called Audio Recorder Deluxe.

As SBCPreacher said, using the line in jack is best for recording from tape to your PC. ARD will record to MP3 format or WAV format. MP3 is smaller.

Once the files are on your PC, just burn them to CD using a good CD Burning program. I use Ahead Nero Burning Rom.

 

Use line in and Audacity (freeware for Linux, Windows & Mac).

Works best to use a preamp, but if you are careful with volumes, a regular cassette player will do.

 

I have a 100 watt technics stereo with a dual cassette deck. I hook the cable to the line in on my computer but where do I hook the other end onto my stereo at.

Probably the tape output if you have one on the stereo, or you could just upplug the jacks from the tapedeck and plug computer in there (audio out).

I use a tape deck and Harmon-Kardon (sp?) CD recorder on my stereo, then convert the CD's to mp3. However, my mp3 software will not convert at 16k with XP, so I have to make '98 available on my spare hard drive. The converting software that is sold by Adobe (the name eludes me at the moment) is outstanding, but it is expensive.
