Teen youth leaders

    For all you teens out there, how would you feel about a 19-year old newly wed couple as your youth leaders?

    not enough info for me to answer...

    -What is their history with the group?
    -In what capacity will they be leading (Sunday School, small group leader, etc.)
    -What age group will they lead? 7th-graders? Seniors?

    Need innnnnnnnnnnput.

    I agree with rbell. Not enough information for a good solid answer. That said I will speculate a little.

    If the youth group is pre-teen, then depending upon the maturity of this couple and if there is someone overseeing them (Sunday school superintendent or youth pastor) then it could work well.

    If the group is the teen group then I would say that this couple is too close in age and experience to be an effective youth leader. However they could be effective in assisting with this group and could be trained to take it over in the future.

    To specify better, they both basically grew up in the teen group until graduating almost 2 years ago. They will be mostly leading the high school group, grades 9-12.

    If someone can help them, oversee them, etc., it could work. But, you may have issues with some of your older students...they will remember these guys as high-schoolers, and there could conceivably be issues there.

    I would strongly caution against just "throwing 'em out there." Be sure they have guidance and accountability built in.

    What does God think? Or is that too simplistic?

    I know some that became senior pastors at the age of 22 and have done well, but it is foolish to think that one is better off foregoing some kind of formal training in this day and age.

    There is nothing like accountability. That has been God's idea since Genesis 3. [​IMG]

    Sometimes, youth will relate better to someone close to their age, IF he has good leadership skills and walks closely with God. [​IMG]

    No way no how!!

    They don't know the difference or have the proper seperation from the group age-wise to pull off the most difficult part of being a youth pastor/leader, which is being a friend, yet knowing when to step into the role as the authority and making them mad when need be. There is not any way they are separated from the group enough to be able to take a stand as an authority figure.

    I used to believe that one must be close in age to relate well to teens. I have found that no matter the age it is how you treat them that determines the relationship and how well they will relate to you. They have to know that you love them.
