Terrible Accident In Florida

Yesterday on I-75 near Gainsville Florida there was a terrible accident that included two 18 wheelers and several cars. Seven persons were killed and many injured. I was there just about one half mile from it and could see the smoke billowing on the other side of the little rise in the road. I knew it had to be a serious accident and after awhile word filtered back to us that there were indeed fatalities. My prayers go out to those families who lost loved ones and to the injured that they make a speedy recovery.

Thankfully I was a bit away from this one and not first on scene like has happened to me before. In 38 years of professional driving I have been first on scene at major accidents 3 times and have done what I could to help folks until the professionals arrive. Every time this has happened I say a quick prayer for God's help to strengthen me for what I am about to see and He hasn't failed me yet. All I can say is that I have such great respect for the First Responder folks who do this sort of thing on a daily basis.

I'm thinking this is the same accident: Florida interstate crash: 5 of the 7 killed were kids on their way to Disney World - CNN

I read about this accident this morning after seeing the headline that 5 children died in it that were on their way to Disney World.
Apparently a church group event where they were traveling in a van. Poor kids and parents, awful timing!...saddest news I've heard in while...

My son came home in tears and frustration last year after great difficulty helping to save a 13 year old boy from a fiery crash he witnessed and now he and I carry powerful fire extinguishers in our Jeeps. I've also seen a couple car fires in the past. You never know...but I plan to be prepared for the fight should I come across such an event again! I gladly paid for the $100 extinguishers considering the value should they ever be needed.

I was not on that portion of I-75 yesterday, but I was last week. I regularly visit customers in that area. I do not know who is to blame for this tragic accident, but many passenger vehicle drivers are not careful around semis. I drive on I-4, 429, I-75, 95, and the FL Turnpike weekly and have witnessed more wrecks than I care to remember.

Exactly! I have a large fire extinguisher in the truck plus a 3 ft. prybar in case the doors won't open and I have to smash some windows to get people out in case of fire. Some time ago a four car collision happened around Atlanta as I was waiting at a light and saw the whole thing. I grabbed my items and ran to the vehicle that had ended up against a fence and thankfully there was no fire so I told the occupants to stay put and wait for medical. The people in the other cars were okay also.

From what I heard one of the trucks and one car were headed northbound and crashed into each other, they then went over the median into the southbound lanes and hit the other truck and somehow the van with the kids got tangled up too and that was that.
