Tesla EV catches fire, spews toxic fumes

A 18 wheel Diesel truck carrying fuel and catches fire might we spew toxic fumes and result in road closure. But do these make the news?

 

Sure they do. The difference in how far the news spreads may be related to the number of Diesels per Tesla. With millions of Diesel semis out there, crash-and-burns get local news unless there's injuries/fatalities. With hundreds (??? I don't really know how many) of Teslas, it's bigger news, like a man-bites-dog story.

 

If only that were true. First, even adjusted for the number of vehicles on the road, their are about 5 times as many vehicle fires powered by fossil fuel, than powered by battery.

A prototype vehicle being tested to determine how to improve its design had a problem. The story should be what did Tesla learn so as to improve its Semi-truck design for the future? But instead we get the usual propaganda from those who think clinging to fossil fuel will hold back a better technology. Tell that to the folks that manufactured oil lamps.

The sheriff’s office said officials from multiple departments, including a hazmat team responded to the fiery wreck at 9:15 a.m. local time.

Ohio Environmental Protection Agency spokesperson Bryant Somerville told CNN the truck was carrying 7,500 gallons of diesel when it crashed.

The sheriff’s office said diesel from the tanker got into a nearby river and leaked into Brandywine Falls, a 60-foot waterfall, briefly causing a creek to catch on fire.

On January 2, 2019, a driver pulled his SUV right in front of a tanker carrying #2 heating oil, on Route 27 in Belgrade Maine. The truck driver's avoidance response failed to avoid a collision but saved the SUV guy's life. It also caused the truck/trailer to roll on its side. The impact opened the tank and friction lit the fire. Brave men got the injured truck driver to safety before the flames reached him while the burning liquids flowed 100 yards down the slight grade. We could see the smoke from Augusta eastside, 15 miles to the east. Made the 6 PM news on the Portland stations but I don't know if the news spread beyond Maine. Had the trucker and/or SUV driver been killed, I'd guess that some national evening news would've picked up the story.
The fire wrecked about 50 yards of pavement and 20 hours later the road was still steaming and had melted the several inches of overnight snow. Once things had fully cooled, a lot of soil had to be excavated and safely deposited elsewhere.

I personally have little interest in buying an EV, mainly because our frost-pocket location has an average bottom-of-winter temperature in the middle -20s F and 25 mornings at zero or colder. If my 2011 Ranger dies (has ~160k miles) I might look for the hybrid version of the Ford Maverick pickup.

 

Yes, EV's should not be mandated, or given special funding to distort market price. Nearly all the anti-EV arguments arise from the fascist tactics of those waging war on fossil fuel and the free enterprise economic system supported by low energy costs.
