Speaking as a Retired certified driving instructor - I understand where she is coming from.
For example - air bags were initially were designed for an average size man. That is the reason that small people were dying due with air bags. Over the course of several years - that is being corrected.
Thus her quote "“Since cars are not required to be tested with the safety of women in mind, women are at higher risk of injury and death in car crashes,” is actually correct. In addition, women tend to have a better driving record.

Now - if you want to have a little bit of fun- ask her why women have lower insurance rates. Of course the answer is that women have a better driving record. Then we would say - "But don't you believe in equality? -- Of course she would say that it should be based on driving record. We then could answer "OK, but does that also apply to religion, citizenship, race, marital status, ect???"

And back to the air bags - be sure to belly button is at least 6-10" away from the steering wheel. (any further info- I will have to charge you)

It looks like this study in 2011 significantly impacted the industry by showing that women are 47% more likely to sustain a serious injury in a motor vehicle accident with a seatbelt and the authors attributed it to the car design and crash testing.

It seems like before 2011, most female crash dummies were only used in the passenger seat, particularly in frontal crash tests.

Things have probably improved since but the lack of regulation may result in some manufacturers not taking this problem seriously.

off hand - I do not know - retired a couple of years ago - have not keped up with everything.

Regendered crash dummies may have no impact on the statistics, which BTW reveal that "…[M]ore men than women are injured and killed in car crashes…."
