Years ago, the music man, about once each month, would put an insert in the bulletin (now I know that most may not use one) giving a short "story behind the hymn."

I kept these for years, and have enjoyed rereading and finding that without computers the man was fairly accurate.

Does anyone occasionally still offer the congregation a bit of history of the author?

    What of contemporary writer testimonies?

Most songs used today don't have a story, or the story is anemic in comparison to the experiences those who penned the great hymns of faith. I find that even when knowing the background, the best hymns are like the psalms, unfathomable until God has brought one through the experience described.

Once that's happened, "Our God Is an Awesome God" satisfies like an unsalted rice cake.

What an awesome idea! Knowing some of the song writers for today, I know that every song has a story behind it - and every artist has a story as well. :) That would actually make a great book!

Does anyone know why Issac Watts wasn't married? The person he asked was so ashamed, couldn't even look him in the eye as she turned him down. It was the only time he ever asked anyone. But what was the reason?

Does anyone know which hymn writer had their intended die by drowning on their wedding day, and years later was found face down in a creek - assumed drowned?

Maybe we should have a posting on the writers of hymns and the testimony of their living.

A hearty amen to that! There are way to many songs today that lack experience.

Look up Horatio Spafford, who wrote "It is Well With My Soul." It'll stir your heart.

You can find a lot of them by Googling "Hymn Stories" or "Stories Behind the Hymns."

Here, here!! I second this!! Too many "man centered" songs. One that I truly don't like is "Shake My Mother's Hand for Me". Don't shake my mom's hand when you get there, bow before Jesus and thank Him for what He did.
