That's Not How You Say That

This is intended as a light-hearted topic.

Do you ever sit in church or Sunday school and hear the preacher/teacher mispronounce words and it irritates you just a little?

All day yesterday, I heard the word "sepulchre" mispronounced. It was being pronounced SEP la kuhr. The proper pronunciation is SEP uhl kuhr. I know it's nothing major, but a bit distracting.

Are there any words, Bible words or otherwise, that you hear mispronounced often at church?

My biggest pet peeve (as far as this topic goes) is when the pastor/teacher tells you to go to the Book of Revelations. THERE IS NO "S" AT THE END OF THIS BOOK!!!!! It's "Revelation"! Okay, I'm glad I got that off my chest :Smile.

I also hear “Today we’re going to look at Psalms 119.” It’s the Book of Psalms, but each chapter is a psalm (singular).

Yeah. But the look up on our forum here requires a single Psalm to be cited as Psalms.

I used to have a pastor who would butcher Biblical names on purpose - Malachi became Mu-loch-ee; Habbakuk may become Hab-uk-kuh, Hub-bak-ah, or others that I forget. Since I'm sure he knew that would get on people's nerves, I suspect he had a mean streak deep in his soul.
Not to worry - He was Assembly of God, not Baptist.

Mal-ahh-che, the Italian prophet.

My elderly friend, who grew up in a group home and lived a life of hard labor has a perchance for mispronouncing biblical names. We encouraged him to use only the first letter of the names so we all wouldn’t bust our guts open laughing.
