Where do they come from? Most of them are church related, but not all.

I post at work sometimes (where I am today) and some of the ads seem kind of improper.

    Dating websites, etc.

Yes I see them too & I agree that they may be targeting the wrong demographic audience..... but that's what happens when you let the world in. Google has its place ....but not here on a Christian forum.

They are oftentimes based on what has been typed on the page or what else you have typed on your computer. I keep seeing ProPresenter on mine which is the software we use at church for our song projection. LOL For a time I saw a singles ad that was very improper and I believe Baptist Board can report them to Google and ask them to be removed from our site but I'm not sure. I use AdBlock with my browser so I don't see ads anymore. :)

That's how it is on another sports website I go too.

But I'm at my work computer, and I'm very picky about what I do and don't visit.

So I'm surprised what is showing up.

They wouldn't be necessary if we as members would paid a membership fee.

    But I never see them.

Adverts? There are adverts? I am not looking for adverts so I guess I am blind to them. If they help to pay for the site, then so be it.

We can waste more time on trivia and miss the vital Christian message.

    Cheers,

    Jim

As I type this, there's an ad for a vacation in Honolulu. It's February in Wisconsin. Certainly a targeted ad.

some of the ads seem just plain random. I mean really I'm not into dating period and one that pops up most often is filled with women and obviously aimed at men, lol.

But for a long time after I did some research into cruise lines the ads I saw were for Princess Cruise Lines. Google follows you around the internet. Of course here lately all the research I've done is historical in nature which must mean boring, cause I'm only getting ads for theological and leadership courses. (I get more of those than the dating ads)

Poor Google. It has a hard time with people who don't play on the web all day. ;)

Some of the adverts are geographical. For example, the one at the top of the screen when I first went to the Baptist Board today was for Churchill Insurance, which as far as I know if a UK company. Others depend on the content of our posts. For instance, on the music forum, in the thread "Learning to Play Music", Winman's post 6 contains the word "guitar" five times, and other posts also include that word. The adverts I see on that page are for a video about playing blues guitar riffs, "Eric Clapton's Guitar Teacher", and "Click here for Guitar Chords Made Ridiculouslously Simple." (I think that is a good reason for us writing "s*xual" and similar, rather than the full word - it's not prudishness about using the full word).

I'm a member of other vBulletin boards and the ads defray a ton of costs for the site owners of message boards so it's understandable.

My point was the ads seemed inappropriate for this site. Some of the dating ads seemed a bit "risque"

I'm not debating this either. We had ads on a sports site I used to run.

Again, it's the content that seemed weird. Like right now I have one for "Becoming a pastor"

Another one was for "Match.com" I think.
