The Bible We Use

    Hi there everyone!

    Well, I'm a Southern Baptist, and I've had a question that's been troubling me lately. My question is simply this: what convinces us that the Bible we use today is the one we should be using? I'm not saying we need to start accepting other books like the Koran or the Book of Mormon or anything like that. I'm just curious, what convinces us that the current compilation of books is God's scripture to us? After all, wasn't it a council of men who put it all together and everything? Why is it that we use the 66 books that we do, but Catholics also have the Apocrypha, which they say should be included? I'm not trying to be a pain here or anything. I'm just really curious about this. I've been questioning this lately, and due to the fact that I haven't gotten a prompt answer (which is my own fault really; I haven't asked anyone up until now), it's been affecting me in my spiritual walk with the Lord. I really want to be as close to Him as I can be, but I've found that when I don't find answers to my questions, they tend to nag and get in the way. Any help any of you could give would be appreciated, and I'm looking for an answer from those who DO believe that the 66 books of the Protestant Bible ARE the correct and inerrant, complete compilation of God's scriptures to us today. I'm getting tired of questioning this, and I don't get much chance to meet with my pastor and talk with him about it. So, if someone (or a few people) could please respond and let me know about their understandings and opinions, that would be a great help. Thanks!

    Without reiterating church history, those who determined the the books to be included and called the bible had access to the best available manuscripts of report....nearest to the 1st century. The Apocrypha came later and many concepts contained in them are foreign to the accepted manuscripts and therefore rejected. There were other manuscripts that were rejected as well, based on comparison with the ones that were adopted. There may yet be manuscripts that are part of the bible, but they haven't been found.

    This is a simple explanation, and I trust will help to alleviate your concerns. The details would get into dates, people, councils, translations and versions, and I don't think you want that. If you do, there are many books which delineate these facts, better than we could do here on the forum.

    At one point or another, we just gotta take it on faith. I don't too much worry about the apocrypha. I don't use them, and I don't badmouth people who do.

    Most who assert the exclusion of the apocrypha point to the council of Nicea, while those who assert the inclusion point to the council of Jamnia (where the Sanhedrin met after the temple in Jerusalem was destroyed), which off the top of my head, took place some 200 years before the council at Nicea.

    For all we know, we could both be wrong. We just gotta take a leap of faith on the subject.
