Does anybody wear one ? Earring, pendant, necklace, bracelet ? Is it a cross, or a crucifix ? What are your thoughts on this ? Is it bad to wear a cross as jewelery, but not on your t-shirt ? Is it OK to have a cross, but not a crucifix ?

I don't wear jewelery, just a non-conductive watch. (I work around some pretty high voltages, and some scary machinery.) I have a few t-shirts with Bible verses,(Hebrews 11:6, John 16:33), and our Church has a plain glass cross sculpted into the front facade.

This was my reply on another board to someone saying it was very wrong to do so. [IMG]

Old topic, I know, but it caught my interest.
I used to wear a necklace, and no, I didn't worship it, lol! I'll also add that I've never seen anyone where jewelry in order to worship it.
What it was? It started as a star of David that I wore as a symbol of my heritage. When I became a Christian I changed it for a star of David with a cross on it to show my new belief. It actually became a good witnessing tool, because people would ask me what it meant and I'd get to explain. :-D
Alas, I was being vain one day and using a curling iron on my hair..I'd set the neclkace on the counter, and when I went to plug in the iron the necklace caught on the plug, I didn't see it, and when I pushed it in I almost got to see Jesus, live and in person. That was the end of the necklace, lol, it was melted, and I haven't replaced it.
BUT, I probably will one of these days when I can afford to spend money on gold instead of electric and all those other pesky little needs, and I will wear it and I promise I will not bow down to it or worship it in any way, shape or form. LOL!
BTW, context in bible study is very important! We have all kinds of rules and things we're told to do and not do that are put out as biblical when they're not. We need to be very cautious when we say things are of God, and make sure they are indeed, or we're nothing more than Pharisees.

That said, I don't wear any jewelry for the most part simply because I don't like it. I bought a wedding ring not long ago and wear it outside the house just to make it obvious that I'm not available.
I wouldn't wear a shirt or clothing that had any symbols or promoted Christianity of Jesus in any way. It just would really seem to be disrespectful to advertise him in the same style as people do beer and cartoons.
The necklace I had held meaning for me emotionally is why I had it, people noting it and questioning just happened, it wasn't worn for that intention. [IMG]

I came from a Holiness church after many years and came back to my original roots being a Baptist. The Holiness people forbid any wearing of anything but wedding rings and watches even though there are plenty of Old Testament examples that men and women both wore Jewelry. They took two scriptures out of the New Testament and twisted them to fit their teachings. They also
took the story where Jacob took away the jewelry from the women but did not tell people the reason was that the jewelry was part of idol worship.
Also they would use the golden calf story but would twist the story.

I do not think that everyone that wears a cross wears it to worship the cross. It is a symbol of Christianity and I believe wearing one is a statement that that person claims to be a follower of Christ just like the Early church used the symbol of a fish.

I think there is nothing wrong with wearing a cross because it is a reminder of the terrible price Christ paid for our salvation.

I wear a gold cross around my neck at times. I don't worship it.

I have to agree. I see nothing wrong with wearing a cross. It is a constant reminder of how much Jesus loved me! [IMG]

However,Is it wrong to wear a cross with Jesus still on the cross? I don't like it because He is not on the cross, He is risen and alive.

    I don't think there's anything idolatrous about wearing a cross; as a teen-ager I wore a large wooden one.

It was just a reminder of His sacrifice and a witnessing tool.

Is a crucifix different from a cross in any real way? Or do we just not like it because (as in so many other things) we don't want to be associated with Catholicism?

BTW: It does make me cringe when I see a half-naked rock singer gyrating and singing about God knows only what when wearing a cross. Kind of like I feel about people with religious bumper stickers who cut me off in traffic. :(

I have a little one that was my grandmother's but I don't wear it often because it's pretty old and the chain is very delicate. I'm too afraid I'll lose it!

Thanx, all. I am of the opinion most of you are. But I find myself uncomfortable looking at a cross with Jesus still on it. He kinda looks pathetic, not triumphant. But I think it might be upbringing that does it to me.

This is along the lines of Mr Curtis's thinking. To me, the crucifix doesn't represent the whole story. Christ is risen from the dead, and we worship a living God.

I don't wear a crucifix, but I do wear a cross on a necklace. (Of course my cousin laughs at me because I made the comment "If Jesus came in our time period and was electrocuted in the electric chair, I'd wear a small electric chair around my neck...[we were talking about wearing the cross as jewelry then too])

I see nothing wrong with wearing a cross, I have a cross on a necklace. I don't like crosses with Christ on it due to the fact that Jesus rose again and is no longer on the cross.

It is bad that I see people wearing crosses but their daily life doesn't reflect Christ. That is unfortunate.

I generally prefer doves over crosses, although we all wear crosses when we lead in worship (it's a liturgical church). I prefer a celtic-styled cross, but always have to borrow them because I've yet to find one I really liked and could afford.

I had a professor in seminary who was known for his dry wits who once - upon noticing someone wearing a cross - commented "You have to wonder how Jesus would feel about it."

Always struck me as a good point.

I do wear a dove earring.

Wow, a liturgical Baptist church? I didn't know there was such a thing... kinda makes me think of jumbo shrimp and military intelligence... ;)

    Eric,

There are plenty of them out there - mostly affiliated with the Alliance of Baptists. If I'm not mistaken, Pullen where you are is liturgical (although not as high church as we are).

'Learn something new every day... I guess that only shows how little I know about denominations... I grew up in a secular home and didn't accept Christ until I was 21 (5 years ago), and I still only have a vague idea about what the differences are between denominations.

Does the Alliance of Baptists have a web site by any chance? I'm happy with my church and wouldn't even consider shopping around, but I'd like to improve my knowledge of what's out there.

I own a cross necklace but rarely wear it, the chain is so delicate. I don't see anything wrong with wearing them.
As for crucifixes, well they seem to portray a dead Savior. He is risen! Triumphed over hell and the grave! He is alive forever more!

I do wear a cross. I don't worship "it", but I do worship the one who died on it.
For me it is a reminder of the one who gave his life that I might be saved. It also reminds me that my sin is painfull to him.
I have had people ask about it and it gives me an oppertunity to tell them about Jesus.
