Most citizens still have it as long as the president says so.

I wouldn't give what Olberman says much credence at all.

He's certainly not a reporter. More like a liberal shill with a very large axe to grind.

Why on earth is it even a debate on confering constitutional protections on enemy combatants? Talk about ubsurd, yet at every step in the war on terror, the liberals acting through the the Democratic party, have placed road blocks, issued statements that the President is thwarting the constitution and refusing to pass time sensitive legislation allowing prosecution of the war.

I still feel that the greatest enemy we face currently is the NEW party of Democrats, that have been fighting against the USA since 2000.

Because the term is ill-defined. The Pres can declare any US citizen an enemy combatant.

Pishaw. The Democrats have gone along with most the time sensitive legislation - name one that they have thwarted.

It's the price of democracy that we have to put up with each other - maybe even learn to work together.

This doesn't just apply to enemy prisoners. That's why it's so important. A friend of mine had his apartment broken into by the FBI because they saw him evangelizing some people they were watching. Of course, they didn't have a search warrent nor did they fix what was broken in the break-in. Then they called him and threatened further problems if he told anyone. Can you say Police State?

The Constitution does not confer rights on us. It merely enumerates a few of the rights we have as humans created by God. We observe the right of all, including non-citizens, because we are Americans.

How many people knew the Soviet Constitution had more rights in it than ours? It didn't matter, because the state could suspend the rights of anyone judged to be an "enemy combatant" or whatever.

And therefore, the Soviet Constitution was nothing more than an old document, with no power whatever.

But, unlike Bush we've actually won the war! If you don't believe me look at the election results.

I think Hillclimber would prefer a police state to one that is controlled by the democrats.

For the moment, that seems to be the only two options available. Let's hope this massive defeat brings the GOP to their senses.

That's right, carpro - simply attack the messenger, rather than address the subject matter.

    Good job,

Let us further hope that the democrat's victory brings them to their senses.

Seems to have been the case. Pelosi is acting with a lot more sense than the GOP when they took over.

I"m pleased to see that she intends to remove the rules that kept the minority party from participating for so long. "We won't do to you what you did to us."

That's forgiveness, and sensible policy. You'll learn to hate it.

It's either forgiveness or the dems don't intend to have any serious investigation into the Bush administration's "alleged" wrong doing. Bipartisanship means never having to face responsibility for your actions.

Law enforcement is not the same thing as forgiveness. If laws were broken, then the perps need to face justice.

But impeachment, in my opinion, would do little good. Rather, put him on a short leash, and make him help clean up the mess.

Immediately after President Bush signed the Act into law, the Justice Department notified the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia that the Court no longer had jurisdiction over a combined habeas case that it had been considering since 2004. A notice dated the following day listed 196 other pending habeas cases for which it made the same claim.

The President says this new act will "save American lives" and that it "is a part of making sure that we do have the capacity to protect you." I wonder what are the chances of someone who is innocent of any crimes being arrested and held without a right to a trial under this new law. What are the chances of someone being arrested for simply looking like the suspect? You could ask Amanda Sylvester. At least she was released after one week in jail, had she looked like a possible terrorist suspect she could have been taken to another country and held indefinitely under Bush's new law.

"September 11 happened in part because Americans naively trusted their government to protect them. To conclude from 9/11 that the government should be more sacrosanct is among the worst possible lessons that could be drawn." —James Bovard

"If Tyranny and Oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy." —James Madison

Undoubtedly, this helped to energize Americans to vote out the GOP.....

It's already happened. Under the patriot Act anyone's home can be invaded without a search warrent and they can be dragged off to jail without being charged and without access to a lawyer.
