Man was not born free and is everywhere in chains. Man was born a sinner and is in a state of depravity. Therefore, government cannot improve man--anyway government is a function of man. Liberals are stuck in the 1800s.

A true liberal is almost libertarian. What we now call "liberals" are in fact "leftists."

He is spot on through most of the clip, but slips a bit toward the end. Progressives do not understand evil and are not interested in hard evidence, only in their own opinion and political power, so his three questions mean nothing to them. Based on lies, progressivism is doomed regardless of any moral agenda.
They cannot fix with a system the evils inherent in man. Perhaps more than most, progressives suffer from the delusions of evil, and in that willful ignorance would completely destroy the very foundations on which a functioning free society depends.
I agree that progressives are beyond the pale of logic.
Hopefully, Sowell's logical questions will work with those not infected with progressivism.

Yes, his questions are good for those willing to think things through rather than just listen to arrogant elitists tell them how wise they are to leave it to the elitists to do their thinking for them.
For those who would be won away from that, it may take people more like themselves to get through.
Meanwhile, the center may shift the right way or the wrong, depending on the successes of the extremes.

I think there should be a differentiation between "liberal" and "leftist." I consider myself a true liberal, and find that I increasingly have nothing in common with these "leftists" who claim to be liberals..... starting with the 1st and 2nd Amendments (IMO you can't be a TRUE liberal and support any attempts to limit the 2nd Amendment).
As a result, I find that I have more in common with Conservatives and Libertarians than I do with these leftists.

Amen to that! I always said that I could have voted for a Harry Truman or a JFK, men who respected the Constitution.
And Don Juan JFK deflowered at least one woman in the White House and he won an award double cross for the Bay of Pigs.
Seems different across the pond.
I get the impression that all forms of Socialism are despised & rejected over there since WW2 after which the allegation of "Communism" was sufficient to condemn anyone concerned with social justice to, loss of livelihood or liberty or even prison as "UnAmerican."
McCarthism seems to be alive & well.
In the UK Jeremy Corbyn & those of us who support him are vilified by all sorts of slanderous & libellous accusation beginning with "antisemitic" & "racist" for challenging Israel's occupation & settlements in Palestine, & the imprisonment & murder of children, reporters & medics, etc;
also challenging the austerity policies that make many thousands of people homeless to die in shop doorways, after struggling to pay their way, often with several ow paid jobs;
and proposing fair taxation so that the rich few pay their taxes, instead of relying on taxes from the many - employed & retired folk.

I used to be an anglophile for most of my life but Muslim immigration seems to have changed England forever and not for the good. England has a more advanced welfare state than the USA because of the socialized medical scheme over there. We have some medical welfare here. I can think of three programs. One is Medicare for people over 65 and it is very comprehensive and very bankrupt. People working pay a Medicare tax but it does not cover current expenses so the federal government kicks in more money. A second one is Medicaid, which is federal-state combo program that is for people with little or no income of all ages. Not all doctors accept Medicaid patients so many go to county hospitals or certain other doctors who are able to accept patients that bring them little or no profit. A third program is for military veterans who have special dedicated Veterans Hospitals and clinics. The effort is to trim this service by giving eligible veterans vouchers to go to private doctors as many live a long way from Veterans Hospitals.
The USA runs a deficit of a trillion dollars a years roughly. With a total federal debt of 22 trillion dollars it is clear that the money will never be paid. The Democrats make no effort to reduce spending and the GOP is unsuccessful in cutting any programs. Spending alone at the current rate should throw us into a no-escape depression in the long run. Because we do not have as much unemployment as the UK, our numbers of homeless as a percentage are probably lower but both political parties want more cheap labor and we are faced with millions of people crossing our borders illegally for whom we really do not have any jobs unless they replace at a lower wage American workers.
On the issue of foreign policy, some are saying that Europe is starting to wake up to the Chinese threat. Socialism has always been anti-Semitic and we see it with the hard left in this country now. Islam teaches that Muhammad killed 800 Jews once and it is forbidden to say that what Muhammad did was wrong. Palestine, as you know, is merely Latin for Philistine. Israel is an American military ally so we don't have so much rhetoric in favor of Arabs, who have a total land mass larger than the USA. Nor do we have a long history in the Middle-East. Now that we export oil and are self-sufficient, we are not at the mercy of the Arabs as is Europe. Of course, the UK and France allied with Israel in 1956 to try to take the Suez Canal away from Egypt but the Ike stopped the three of them. It is surprising that the UK would do that to the Egyptians, isn't it?
As for Joe McCarthy, Ike put a stop to him a long time ago--perhaps sixty-five years ago. That does not mean that Hollywood and the State Department are not riddled with communists--it just means that Congress stopped looking into it. Communism is not admired in the USA except with college professors and Democrats like Pelosi who has long-time ties to California communists such as Peoples Temple Jim Jones and others in San Francisco, which currently is one of the dirtiest cities in the world.

Most amazing in this is that some Christians imagine that the world is or can be altruistic. It is as if they’ve never understood the need for the Gospel, that “the whole world lies in wickedness,” (1 Jn 5:19b), “that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient,” (1 Tim 1:9a).
Governments are not going to be better than the people, and they are not going to make people good. So-called “social justice” in the US stands for abortion, infanticide, sexual perversion, corruption of children, destruction of families, severe taxation, atheistic humanism, and an eventual fascism that would drive good people underground or completely out.
Is it really any wonder that “social justice” should be so despised and rejected by right thinking people?

No one despises voluntary socialism. You should be free to help anyone you deem needs it.
McCarthy had a lot right, as those he was targeting were traitorous, and during a particularly dangerous time. Worldwide, communism has always been deadset on overthrowing the government and stripping away individual freedoms, and has succeeded in this in many countries to their detriment. These revolutions have inevitably persecuted and murdered believers in the process and in the aftermath.
For my readers residing in the UK (I can't assume y'all are Englishmen, there might be the odd Jock or Taffy reading this), I came across this little observation. It helps to explain the differences between Brits and Americans on the question of socialism.
In the UK, wealth redistribution/socialism is an accepted political position because the lower income earners will never be accepted as one of the "good and gracious."
In the States, it isn't because most everyone aspires to become the next Bill Gates, Henry Ford Sr, or Warren Buffet. So, they don't want their gains to be taxed away.
