I was doing a follow-up visit on an older couple who had visited our church. During the visit, he asked me if I knew who the first twins in the Bible were. Jacob and Esau immediately came to mind but I thought he was telling a joke like, "How long did Cain hate his brother? As long as he was 'Abel'."

But he was serious and believes that Cain and Abel were the first twins. I turned to Genesis four and looked and I couldn't refute the suggestion. It is the first I had heard of someone believing this.

It certainly makes no difference doctrinally, but I was wondering if anyone else had considered this possibility.

    Silly.
If simply being a "brother" and listed as such implies twins, the Huz and Buz (two of my favorites) would be before Jake and Esau.

    Dr. Bob --

I do not think it is so silly. Read it in Hebrew.
It reads as though this is a possibility, but it
    does not state it outright.

This was discussed in a class I took some
years ago on understanding the Tanakh, com-
paring English versions to the Hebrew lan-
    guage version.

By the way, what better way to quickly populate
    the earth--multiple births.

    Here is his argument:

Gen 4:1 And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.
2 And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. (KJV)

The Bible says Eve "conceived and bare Cain." Then it says in verse two that she "bare again." It makes no mention of another, separate conception.

As Pastor Bob 63 said earlier, this makes no difference doctrinally, but it is interesting. Maybe they were.

You think Eve had an epidural? [IMG]

Awwwww, God wouldn't break Eve in on more than one at a time, would He?
