The four beasts of Revelation

We are studying the Book of Revelation at church and have gotten to chapter 4. There is a lot of speculation as to whom or what the four beasts are. I would like to hear (or read as the case may be) what others think concerning this subject, especially since the four beasts are prominent throughout the Book of Revelation.

They are representative of the gospels -- Mt, Mk, LK, Jn.

Revelation 4:7 tells us

"And the first beast was like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the thrid beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle."

Where do you get the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John out of this??
