Interesting that this verse should be cited in a "history" topic. The verse applies to every one of us but is 100% ignored when analyzing history or politics. Particularly the history of politics.

Political systems are designed as if every day in every way we are becoming
smarter and more more moral when history demonstrates that humans are as evil as we were 2000 years ago. Every experiment in a new moral government has failed in less than a generation.

If Christian political activists such as can be found on this list . . . instead of trying to reactivate failed political experiments such as is found in American history would admit that they, like the rest of the human race, are greedy liars exactly as the Bible teaches and try to devise a government which will work best for 300 million greedy liars.

(Yes, this is a circular statement. Google kurt godel)

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
    Jeremiah 17:9, AV 1873

Sure, history is repleate with examples of man's failure and repeated failure.
Politicians, in particular, are particularly poor historians and continue to make the same errors as their predecessors.

Christian politicians (Is that an oxymoron?) also make these same mistakes.

History itself teaches that although we are developing technologically we are stagnant (and worse off) spiritually.

    Do we give up?

No, Duh, the answer lies in Jesus our Savior and the Savior of the world.

My heart. Your heart. Our hearts. The hearts of all Christians.

    Luke 4:17-20 (New International Version)

17The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:
18"The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
    because he has anointed me
to preach good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
    to release the oppressed,
19to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."[a]

20Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him,

    Isaiah 61:1-4 (New International Version)

    Isaiah 61

The Year of the LORD's Favor

1 The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me,
because the LORD has anointed me
to preach good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners, [a]
2 to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor
and the day of vengeance of our God,
    to comfort all who mourn,

3 and provide for those who grieve in Zion—
to bestow on them a crown of beauty
    instead of ashes,
    the oil of gladness
    instead of mourning,
    and a garment of praise
instead of a spirit of despair.
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
    a planting of the LORD
for the display of his splendor.

4 They will rebuild the ancient ruins
    and restore the places long devastated;
they will renew the ruined cities
that have been devastated for generations.

Why did Jesus stop reading in the middle of an idea, the middle of a sentence? Because evil hearts will rule between the year and the day.
