The Holdomor

Much of Ukraine's resistance to the Russian invasion is based on its memory of Holdomor

Stalin did incredible devastation on the Ukrainian people. I noticed this passage from the link:

"Some scholars believe that the famine was planned by Joseph Stalin to eliminate a Ukrainian independence movement.[10][22] Others suggest that the man-made famine was a consequence of Soviet industrialisation."

That second sentence is highly suspect IMO. All the books I read on the subject point to Stalin as the main cause. (I am surprised that David Marples also believes in a man-made cause.)

I'd recommend "Harvest of Sorrow (Soviet Collectivization and the Terror Famine) by Robert Conquest. I noticed it's still in print and it documents in great detail what happened. And it shows how the Western media was deceived and also ignored what was happening.

Either way it turns out, it will be a mess. Ukraine can't win.

Russia will find it hard to win as well. They have the potential to seize Ukraine eventually but what they don’t have are the resources to HOLD Ukraine against a sustained insurgence. It’s going to become a matter of how willing Putin is to squander resources that cannot be easily replaced while Russia’s current economic state.

Troop morale is a real thing and they’ve started this campaign with poor morale with a confusing mission statement that turned out to be a lie. I’m sure Putin has old school Soviet hard liners in various positions of leadership but no way is the average 20 year old Soldier gung ho about this.
