The Insanity of the NFL

I hijacked the HoF thread (sorry about that), so I decided to open a new thread about the insanity of the NFL.

Do we really know anything about the NFL from week to week? Before week 6, would anybody but the most ardent homer have said that Indy would have thrashed what was thought to be a good Baltimore defense? A week after a convincing win over Dallas, Washington loses to St Louis? Speaking of the Cowboys, it's usually a good week when "America's Team"* loses, especially to a team who has Kurt Warner as its QB. Love me some Kurt Warner. Dude didn't even fumble when he was sacked late in the game. My enthusiasm for a Cowboys loss was tempered by my team's so-called vaunted defense costing them yet another game. The squib kick was a terrible idea, but, beyond that bad call, how do you not keep Atlanta from making the exact play they needed to make in order to setup the FG? I have no hard feelings for Falcons fans (both of them) though, not after they endured what Vick put them through last year.

In the hijacked HoF thread, I took a shot at the Detroit Liedowns and later I realized I really shouldn't be so hard on them. I mean, how do you blame a Liedowns player for not knowing how deep the endzone is when they're never there?

Almost every player is like that, not just the Jaguars. The players get really motivated to get the big contract, and once they get it, they're not quite as motivated to keep up that level of play. That is, until they reach the end of the contract and want to get the next one.

I agree. For everybody but maybe the superstars, like say Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, etc., they worry about winning. But I'd guess that's mostly because they already have more money than they could ever hope to spend.

 

I heard that the Detroit Liedowns held their annual Halloween Party on Monday night. One costume up for consideration was to go as a Super Bowl Trophy, but nobody on the team knew what it looked like.

 

Well, that'll be it for the Bears season now with Orton out and Wrecks in. If the Liedowns had anybody under center except Orlovsky, they would have won yesterday. For most of the afternoon, I dreaded the thought of what the Liedowns fans around here were going to be saying after all the grief I've been giving them lately. And, by lately, I mean ever since I joined this board. Fortunately, they remembered that they're the Liedowns.

I don't know about that. Kurt's starting to get some well-deserved consideration by the media as an MVP candidate.

Looking at their schedule the rest of the way, 11 wins is easily within reach. With the NFC the way it is, the Cardinals could find themselves hosting a playoff game.

 

Who would you choose for the NFL MVP this season? I've selected some candidates that I think are on the short list.

Peyton Manning - without Peyton winning some games early in the season the Colts had no business winning, the Colts wouldn't be within sniffing distance of the playoffs.

Albert Haynesworth - Albert's getting some run here in Nashville, but I think it's pure homerism (the afternoon sports radio show here in Nashville routinely kisses Albert's posterior) as 8.5 sacks isn't getting anybody an MVP award. I've seen several Titans games, and Albert's been Pro Bowl good, but you can't tell me that offensive coordinators go into Titans games thinking, "We can't let Haynesworth beat us."

Matt Ryan - Ryan is the reason the Falcons are 8-5. Remember when it was said that Vick didn't have any good receivers to throw to? I don't hear anybody saying that now.

Drew Brees - I think he'll pass Marino's passing yardage record, especially since he plays the Bears tonight (who aren't good against the pass). As good as his numbers are, he was brutal in the Buccaneers game, a game that the Saints should have won.

Brian Westbrook - Prior to the Arizona game, the Iggles staff wasn't sure Westbrook would even make it past the first quarter and he goes out and scores 4 TD, then follows it up with 2 TD's in an upset win over the Giants.


Who am I missing on the list of candidates?


Yesterday afternoon on Nashville sports radio, this conversation of NFL MVP came up and it annoyed me. Teresa Walker, AP beat writer for the Titans, said that Kerry Collins should get some consideration for NFL MVP because the award shouldn't be all about stats (I agree), and he should get considered because he wins games. Then, she brought up Peyton Manning and said that he shouldn't be as highly considered because his numbers aren't as good as other QBs.

I don't get how you say one guy should be highly regarded for winning games with not great numbers, then disregard another guy that wins games and doesn't have great numbers. Homerism at its finest.

If I had a vote for NFL MVP, my vote would go to Peyton Manning.

 

The Cowboys were destroyed.

The Jets dumped Pennington for Favre, only to watch Chad come back and knock them out of the playoffs while Favre continued his habit of throwing killer interceptions.

The Patriots missed the playoffs.

Does it get much better than that in the NFL? I say no. :thumbs:

Of course, there's always the Bears losing a game they had to win to temper the enthusiasm. At least I don't have to watch them get destroyed by the Iggles next week.

Q. Why doesn't Flint, Michigan have a professional football team?

A. Because then Detroit would want one.
