This will be strictly a bible-study type thread, but I didn't want to put it in Baptist-Only section because it concerns all Christians.
At the same time, Although the passage touches the subject of 'adultery' we don't believe that is the focus of the passage, and it will not be the focus of our commentary/discussion, so we did not see any need to post it in the 'men-only' section, depriving half of Christendom access to the thread.
We have had several quite successful and edifying threads on this subject on other Christian boards, without any need of any kind of 'censorship', and no complaints or objections whatever from Christians of any denomination or philosophical position. So provided others keep 'on topic' and straight up, there should be no problem here either.
Our focus rather will be the meaning of the events in this passage, and the political, legal, and spiritual aspects and issues raised, not any biological questions.
What I'd first like to do is post up what we have collected as the most brilliant and insightful comments of the last 300 years or so on these verses by many commentators of all stripes and creeds, as a good beginning point.
We are only taking short statements of the works of these men and women, so there will be no 'copyright' violation, and this will be well within the realm of 'fair use', as well as the fact that many of these writers are long gone and their works are entirely out of copyright in any case.
As well, we will be adding our own commentary and so this will also fall under review purposes as well.
We will avoid any denominational or sectarian issues in discussing the verses, but rather stick to mainline Christian understanding and issues surrounding the historical background and legal questions which arise.
We hope this commentary thread, if pursued to the end, will edify and enlighten all our Christian brothers and sisters as to the meaning and importance of these verses.
Peace,
Nazaroo
