The Lord's Supper - Question

None that I have been around.

 

Most churches I am familiar with celebrate the Lord's Supper twice each month, or monthly. I had one church that came out of a Brethren (PB) background and they met at the table each week following the morning service...only members could partake or even attend.

We observe the Lord's Supper once every quarter. Every Baptist church (being autonomous) can do it as often as they like. And whenever you do, do it in remembrance of Him.

I have been in baptist churches while on vacation or visiting that tale the Lord's Supper weekly. We take it when the pastor is led.

 

We did, up until a couple of years ago. Some were of the opinion that once a week was just too common and made it not special. I had participated for over thirty years on a weekly basis and NEVER, ever, ever, ever found it to be "common", dull, humdrum, or not special. Why don't we just have it once a year, or once a decade, or maybe just in years which end in double zero. I know, let's just do it like baptism and do it only once in a Christians life and that way we can kill two birds with one stone. We could have a baptism and then have them partake in the Lord's Supper right afterwards and then not have to fool with it again and then that way it would really be special. I mean, we wouldn't want to remember the Lord's sacrifice tooooooo often now would we?

 

The Southern Baptist church I used to attend observed Communion 4 times a year on Tuesday evenings because we believed that the events of Christ's passion/crucifixion began with His last paschal meal Tuesday eve. It was a solemn event, taking about an hour, and included foot-washing, done in a practical manner. Everyone brought a damp white wash cloth,and wiped his/her neighbor's feet, with that neighbor returning the act, men to men, women to women. The pastor and deacons did each others' feet. All the while we were reminded this was all in remembrance of CHRIST.

Obviously we couldn't do it exactly as Jesus did it since we had several hundred people, but it's the IDEA that mattered. In Jesus' earthly time, it was the highest expression of hospitality for a home owner to wash the tired, dusty feet of a traveler who may have been walking all day.

Unfortunately, that church was destroyed a few years later when its elders violated Scripture and dismissed a member who had admitted adultery of his own volition.(No one had had the slightese suspicion of his sin) My dad & mom, I, and many other members felt this was grossly against Scripture; that man had publicly asked for forgiveness, which, according to Scripture must be given to a first-time offender. I believe the REAL reason behind his dismissal was that he refused to reveal the name of his co-sinner whom he said was not a church member. Praise the Lord; that was over 20 years ago; we all have dynamic Baptist church homes now.

 

My church observes communion every two months.

 

Don't know of any that take communion every week.

We have communion at my home church twice yearly, but we also visit other churches when they have their communion services.

We use real unleavened bread, real wine, and pans for footwashing.

 

I don't know of any.

 

When I lived in Melbourne (Victoria, Australia) the church I attended held the communion service every Sunday morning. Was always a joy to be part of it.

My curent church does hthe first sunday morning/third sunday evening normally. When practical reasons suggest it the pastor/elders do shift it around a bit, not locked into the timing in a legalistic way.

Bob - what part of Melbourne? I attended at Brighton Baptist for 3 years when I lived there. (Also went to Brighton Grammar School)

 

Our congregation celebrates a yearly Lord's Supper with a full Passover seder. Throughout the year we have a shorter Lord's supper; it usually invloves a fellowship meal afterwards. Aside from our yearly Seder, we do not have set times.

LOL! I was a member of one that performed the Lord's Supper on Sunday evenings when the Sunday was the fifth of the month. Close enough for you?

I get what you're saying. None of the churches I went to has had the Lord's Supper on a weekly or even monthly basis, but I don't think I'd get tired of it. If anything, it's a more constant reminder of what the Lord has done for us. We can get so wrapped up in the business of serving the Lord that we forget about the Lord.

My Dad taught me that we should only participate in the Lord's Supper if we are 100% right with the Lord. If we have sin in our lives that we aren't willing to "let go of", then we need to let the plates pass us by. I don't recall a pastor teaching this, and I don't see this in the Bible. What's your take on this?

I remember my Dad got mad at my Mom one day on the way home from church because he had his head bowed and eyes closed when everyone else ate the cracker, and Mom didn't nudge him. "I didn't participate in the broken bread!", he angrily told Mom. "So what did you do with the cracker?", Mom asked. Dad replied, "I stuck it in my front pocket!"

I have to laugh every time I visualize him doing this. Dad is like Bob Newhart.

Robycop, I've never heard about washing the feet in church, but I think it's a cool idea. I can understand why we don't do that today...atheletes foot fungi and all (fungus is among us). In fact, it would kinda gross me out to wash someone else's feet...and I'd be embarrassed if they washed mine. But, I think the picture of Jesus washing the disciples' feet was that it's one of the most humble jobs you could do for someone else. Jesus was never proud and He didn't want us to be proud, either. This would be a cool way to remember that we are supposed to be humble servants. It's easy to expect praise and recognition for our work in church today...especially if the pastor recognizes others and forgets to mention us (specifically, ME...hey, I'm human). We need to keep our eyes on the Purpose. Our time on Earth is limited. It's not about us.
