The Mantra of Jabez

    I just finished "The Mantra of Jabez," by Douglas M. Jones, a funny funny book.

    In it you learn to be a "kipper for God." A kipper is "a small fish, smoked and salted, that is kept in a dark vacuum-sealed tin."

    He does this by teaching "you how to chant a daring mantra that, unlike burdensome traditional prayers, God always has to answer. It is brief, which is really nifty for modern evangelical attention spans--only one sentence with four parts. You can even shorten it more if you remove all of the consonants. Just hum the vowels."

    In the booklet he goes on to teach you an effective method for creating sentence sharing opportunities by chanting this simple mantra. It's a funny, in that the truth hurts about us evangelicals, but convicting book.

    Thanks, Will, for the good review. I am an acquaintance of Bruce Wilkerson (Prayer of Jabez infamy) and was appalled at the really bad theology/practice that book advocated.

    Sounds like your's is a tongue-in-cheek poke at that pseudo-spiritual nonsense. Will have to poke around and find a copy!

    The other parody the publisher has put out is "Right Behind," concerning the "Left Behind" books. I haven't read it yet but it had my wife laughing out loud (and not at me for a change.)
