Any thought and/or comments on The Maxwell Leadership Bible (NKJV) by Dr. John C. Maxwell? Questioning Maxwell's notes, not the New King James Version.

Just had one given to me and without much looking into it yet.

I agree. I pastor a church only about 6 blocks from Maxwell's old church, Skyline Wesleyan. Knew him when he was still here. Nice guy, but I would also probably disagree with many of the notes.

I love leadership studies as my MBA specialization is in Leadership. However, while there are many good examples and prime thoughts on leadership in the Bible, the Bible is not merely a book on leadership. When studying leadership, I found that leadership styles throughout the Bible varied and there did not seem to be a cogent overriding theory for how to be a successful leader from the text of the Bible. As well, being a great leader was secondary to obedience. I think having a study Bible on leadership is foolish. The Bible is not designed to give you all the great leadership ideas, but to thoroughly equip you spiritually for every good work.

God came to give us life and give it to us abundantly, He did not come to give us modern leadership theories.

I bought mine for 25 cents at a garage sale to keep it out of unwary hands.

What we need is to back off and let Jesus run His church through the agency of the Holy Ghost, not more man made manipulation programs.

I don't know anything about Maxwell. What is it about his notes that are offensive?

As far as leadership goes, Jesus taught that the greatest of all is the servant. A good leader leads by example and not simply by skills taught in a book or by his words. I think the bible itself is sufficient for learning what it is be a good leader.

This is how I got my copy. It sits on a tall shelf with other gift Bibles that I don't use. No offense to John Maxwell, he's a good author and fine Christian leader, but I didn't care for his limited comments.

We need to be careful with specialty Bibles that add text to the text. Too many of our people are getting them confused. There is only one authoritative text. As pertains to John's study Bible, I found it too limiting and just not a good fit for what I look for in studying. I rarely use study Bibles because I don't care for them much (save the NET Bible.) This one is even more limited as it only handled the text from a leadership standpoint (as I read it.) Not everything in the Bible is about leadership.

Perhaps it will illumine your journey.

Yes, I have not only read the notes but been schooled in them when two different churches, years apart in two different states, decided to follow the guidance of those notes. I watched that "guidance" ruin two fine churches. Hence my distaste for bringing corporate management principles into the church. What runs McD wonderfully is not how Jesus says the church should operate.

And I have a full and rich life, but thank you for the advice.

Maybe so, but several years ago when I was working for a cabinet shop, we got a big job at a local Marriott Hotel. They had the Book of Mormon in every room, and they all said "Free for the taking". So I took them to the nearest dumpster for free. :laugh:

However as it relates to "Study Bibles", I do like my Life Application NIV....YES I SAID NIV...

I like the Life Application Bible series too. The notes, if I am not mistaken, are the same despite which version you use. The notes are practical in nature and I think very helpful in applying the scripture to everyday life.

Hey Mex, the other day someone donated some Seven Day Adventist Children's Bible Stories to the church. To the dumpster they went. There's a big difference between a specialty application Bible and the teachings of a cult.

Garage sales are a good source of study Bibles. I often buy those I consider to be beneficial, even if I have one, to give away.

Just paid a buck for a Master Study Bible.

Just got a like new NASB Study Bible for 25 cents.

But on the rare occasion I run across one that I believe would lead folks astray, offered for 25 cents, you bet I buy it and dispose of it.

The OP asked our opinions, and I gave mine.

Your opinion may well differ.
