The People's Reformation

As many will know, October 31st next year will mark the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther nailing up his 95 theses on the door of Wittenburg Cathedral, generally reckoned to be the start of the Reformation.

I am trying to write a short history of the Reformation in England looking at the ordinary people rather than at the rich and famous. Most people seem to believe that the Reformation in England came about because Henry VIII wanted a new wife. That just isn't so.

So far I have written four chapters. The first is a brief history of Christianity in Britain up to the time of King John, who gave away his kingdom lock, stock and barrel to the Pope. The second and third articles describe Roman Catholicism in England during the Middle Ages; the fourth covers John Wyclif and the early Lollards.
