    It was a beautiful liftoff.

    Space shuttle Discovery lifts off

By MARCIA DUNN, AP Aerospace Writer

After two weather delays and last-minute foam trouble, Discovery and a crew of seven blasted off Tuesday on the first shuttle launch in a year, flying over objections from those within NASA who argued for more fuel-tank repairs.

The majestic shot — NASA's first on Independence Day — was only the second shuttle flight since the Columbia was brought down 3 1/2 years ago by a chunk of insulation foam breaking off the fuel tank.

The foam problem resurfaced during last July's flight of Discovery and again Monday, keeping the space agency debating safety all the way up to the eve of liftoff.

Discovery thundered away from its seaside pad at 2:38 p.m.

Once again, NASA ignores the engineers to make certain their funding continues. Let's hope they can make it back down.

Not to be negative, but apparently foam has hit the shuttle orbiter...

From the article KenH has linked:

"As Discovery thundered away from its seaside pad at 2:38 p.m., live video of the launch did not immediately reveal any sizable foam or debris flying off. But the pictures showed smaller pieces falling from the tank, at least one hitting the shuttle.

About 4 1/2 minutes after liftoff, a bright speck could be seen flying off the fuel tank and striking Discovery's belly. Right after launch, at least three small pieces fell.
    ...
"NASA figures it will be nearly a week before it can decisively say whether Discovery was hit and damaged by foam during launch."

NASA funding will continue. Man will venture out into space. I just hope that we make it to Mars during my lifetime.

I would hate to see the American spirit of adventure and exploration crunched by Nervous Nellie-ism.

    Same here.

God has created humankind with a desire for knowledge and exploration. People will die in all sort of worthy endeavors. Spaceflight involves a measure of risk that our country should assume. All astronauts are volunteers and compete for the opportunity to go. Of course, we should not be reckless, but we shouldn't shy away from the challenge either.

    Oh so sad and true.

I pray that Our Lord brings them home safely.

Hope they get back safe but except for Hubble it has been a waste of lives and assets. They are using 30 year old technology.

Wow... I couldn't disagree with you more.

How old is that commercial airliner you fly on? (Not to mention the age of the technology.)

Furthermore, the shuttle orbiters have been refitted on several occasions to update the technology and capabilities through the years. The cockpit instrumentation has been completely redone and the computer systems and software have obviously be updated.

On the exterior, the tile system has been upgraded and modified on several occasions, and the external fuel tank has been modified a number of times.

Your "30 year old" technology is just not accurate.

But, you sure don't mind seeing the American mission in Iraq crunched by nervous nellie-ism.

You can thank the space program in large part for the computer that you're posting on this forum...

Many medical advances that were not possible...

I had a book back in the early 90's that was over a hundred pages long that just brushed over some of the things that we can thank the space program for. Some of them monumental, some of them minor.

Thank the astronauts next time you use Velcro also.

Dialysis made leaps and bounds, both directly through Tang and indirectly through medical knowledge gained because of the conditions of space. Dual success!
