Greetings and blessings to all my brothers from differing views. May the glory and honor of our Lord Jesus Christ ring throughout the world.

I have constructed an outline of a Un/Limited View of the Atonement as a precursor to an essay that I will be writing. I invite any and all to give comments as they see fit. For the most part, I will not be engaging in debates but using this OP as an opportunity to glean some knowledge and wisdom from your comments and offers of additional information. Since this is a 'best of both options' type of view. I would expect all to be pleased and offended at the same time. ;)

I will put the first half of the outline here in this OP. The rest you can find at The Un/Limited View of the Atonement or Multiple Intentions View: Outline of How the Atonement is Both Christus Victor and Substitutionary Satisfaction (you'll need a free academia.edu account).

Peace and hope to you, brothers.

I. Statement of the Position:

God’s intentions and Jesus Christ’s accomplishments in the IDR (Incarnation, Death & Resurrection) are complex and multiple, not simple and singular. These intentions of the IDR include a general division into two broad headings of accomplishment:

Cosmic Triumph (1Cor 15:24-28, Rom 8:20-23, Psa 8:6, Heb 2:8, Eph 6:12, 1Pet 3:22, Col 2:15).
  1. To overcome the works of the Devil (1John 3:8, Heb 2:14, Col 1:13-14).
  2. To overcome the power of sin (Rom 8:3, Rom 6: 6-7,14).
  3. To overcome the power of death (1Cor 15:26, Heb 2:14).
  4. To overcome the dominion of all principalities and powers (Eph 6:12, 1Pet 3:22, Col 2:15,1Pet 4:11, 1Pet 5:11, Jude 1:25, Rev 1:6)
  5. To overcome the power and dominion of Hades over the dead (Rom 14:8-9, Act 2:36, Rom 6:9, 1Cor 15:55, 1Pet 3:19, Matt 16:18, Luke 16:23, Act 2:27,31, 1Cor 15:55, Rev 1:18, Rev 6:8, Rev 20: 13-14, Rom 6:9).
Substitutionary Satisfaction for the Law (Rom 7:6, Col 2:13-14, Eph 2:15, Tit 2:14, Rom 3:25, 1John 2:2, Rom 6:14, Rom 3:26, Rom 3:31, 1Thes 1:10, Rom 4:15, John 3:36).
  1. Jesus Christ was to be the fulfillment and completion of the Law (Matt 5:17-20, Luke 24:44, Rom 3:26, 31).
  2. Jesus Christ was to be the Substitutionary Satisfaction for the Law for the individual sins of those that believe (Rom 3:25, 1John 2:2, 2Cor 5:21, 1Pet 2:24, Gal 6:2, Heb 9:28) and those who do not believe be judged by their own individual sins and works under the Law (Rev 20:12).
  3. Jesus Christ was to be the establishment of the Advocate (Heb 7:25, 1John 2:1, Rom 8:34, John 14:16) for the advocacy of the sure and certain salvation of God’s elect (those that would believe).
A more Descriptive Labeling of the accomplishments within the two divisions based on the intent of God the Father to make Jesus Christ the “Lord of both the dead and the living” (Rom 14:8-9), i.e., “God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ” (Acts 2:36, [underline mine]). This “Lord” and “Christ” equate to ‘conqueror’ and ‘savior’, respectively. That is, through the IDR and its accomplishments, God has made Jesus Christ both Lord and Savior over all (all has been placed under His foot).

Cosmic Triumph (Lord & Dominion):
  1. The putting of all things under the foot of God (1Cor 15:24-28, Psa 8:6, Heb 2:8).
  2. The reconciliation of all things to the Father (Col 1:20, 2Cor 5:18:19, Rom 5:10).
  3. The securing of a sure and certain bone fide offer of salvation to all mankind through the conquest of the powers and dominion of bondage [see heading III. The Universal Work of the Cross Through the Cosmic Triumph, later in this outline].
  4. The securing of a lawful judgment of the sins of mankind (Rom 8:3) through the conquering of the powers and dominion of sin, death, the Devil, and Hades which works together with the Law of Moses and its fulfillment in Jesus Christ to overthrow lawless sin (Rom 5:13-18). [see heading IV. The Overthrowing of the Lawlessness of Sin and Death later in this outline].

Substitutionary Satisfaction and the Law (Savior & Advocate):
  1. The administering of the Law for the securing of a lawful judgement of the sins of mankind (Rom 8:3) through the fulfillment and completion of the Law through Jesus Chirst (Matt 5:17, Rom 10:4) which works together with the conquering of sin, death, the Devil, and Hades to overthrow the lawlessness over mankind brought about through the sin of Adam. [see the heading IV. The Overthrowing of the Lawlessness of Sin and Death later in this outline].
  1. Jesus Christ as the deliverance from the Law (Rom 7:6, Gal 4:5) through faith to those who would believe (Rom 3:21-22,31). [see the heading V. The Deliverance from the Law]
  1. The establishment of the Advocate (1John 2:1, Heb 7:25, Rom 8:34) for the securing of the sure and certain salvation of His own, His elect (Eph 1:4-5; John 10:11,15; Acts 20:28; Eph 5:25; Tit 2:14; Romans 8:31-39).

II. Statement of Extent:

These two broad divisions with multiple intentions (above) can be said to be for:
  1. Under Cosmic Triumph (Universal): The Cosmic Triumph portion of the Atonement of Jesus Christ (1Cor 15:24-28, Rom 8:20-23, Psa 8:6, Heb 2:8, Eph 6:12, 1Pet 3:22, Col 2:15) was a victory for all mankind without distinction, i.e, it is universal in nature (2Pet 3:9, John 16:8, Rom 1:18-19, 1John 2:2, 1John 4:14, 1Tim 4:10, 2Pet 2:1, 1Tim 2:5-6, John 3:16, Rom 5:6-8, Isa 53:6). [see heading III. The Universal Work of the Cross Through the Cosmic Triumph, later in this outline]
  1. Regarding the Law and Substitutionary Satisfaction (Limited): The portion of the Substitutionary Satisfaction of Jesus Christ under the Law (Rom 7:6, Col 2:13-14, Eph 2:15, Tit 2:14, Rom 3:25, 1John 2:2, Rom 6:14, Rom 3:26, Rom 3:31, 1Thes 1:10, Rom 4:15, John 3:36) was a sacrifice and substitution for only those that believe, i.e., it is Limited in nature to only those that believe (Rom 7:6, Col 2:13-14, Eph 2:15, Tit 2:14, Rom 3:25, 1John 2:2, Rom 6:14, Rom 3:26, Rom 3:31, 1Thes 1:10, Rom 4:15, John 3:36). [see also section VI. Substitutionary Satisfaction from the Law is Limited and V. The Deliverance from the Law ].

What is the purpose of Christ's sacrificial physical death on the cross, or what was accomplished by Christ's sacrificial death?

According to 1 John 2:2, Christ became the means of reconciliation for the whole of humanity, those to be saved and those never to be saved.

If we re-translate "Un/Limited Atonement" we get the question, Did Christ's death reconcile those supposedly chosen before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4) or did Christ's death only provide the means of reconciliation for the lost, providing the opportunity for salvation to everyone who believes? John 3:16
