The "Untouchables" or "unteachables"

Divorce, at least coming out strongly against it as sin. We'd offend too many people in our congregation.

 

I don't know what "camps" are here, or what goes out from the pulpit at "your" church but "DEALING with SIN", "integrity" "paying your bills" ...

 

I believe you can preach anything as long as you have done your research, provide scriptural support and don't speak down but to the congregation. There should be no taboo's from the pulpit but there should be discreetness and love.

* Provide bonus $$ throughout the year for addtitional volunteer time spent etc...

In all my years, I don't remember ever hearing a verse by verse exposition of Romans 9. This is not to say that it hasn't happened and I might have forgotten it. I recently had a Sunday School lesson on whether or not God's judgments and decisions were fair or not in our Sunday School ciriculum. I would have guessed Romans 9 would have showed up in this discussion, but it was nowhere to be found.

I've heard divorce actually tackled head-on once, just once in the 16+ years I have been a Christian. And even then it wasn't brought out as sin, but as something God hates... but it stopped short of "sin". When over half of the Christian population is opting for divorce, I can understand why a pastor would be hesitant to preach on it. but they're not preaching the whole council of God...

That's not to say he ought to crack out the sledgehammer and start busting toes. But sin is sin, whether half the congregation has been diviorced or not.

 

In far too many Baptist churches the issue of Freemasonry is taboo. Could it be that at least in the SBC, it is reported that as many as 2 million men are masons?

Amen. I'd add the true Biblical teaching on divorce; what the Bible really says about election and predestination; Eschatology that doesn't come from a glossy brochure; OT law; Song of Solomon; Church discipline and the true nature of church membership.

 

A couple weeks ago in Bible Study, I did the unthinkable.
I presented both Calvinism and Arminianism to the church...
And I was careful to not show for which points I stand on.
I wanted them to think for themselves and not just parrot their pastor.
We had a great discussion.

Try it sometime. You just might like it.

 

The items listed in this thread are one of the major reasons I believe in an expository preaching and teaching ministry in the local church. When you are going verse by verse through books of the Bible you cannot pick and choose what you want to deal with, but rather must deal with the things that God shares in His Word.

 

Romans 9

I taught through Romans 9 while pastoring. It took about 14 sermons.

 

Song

I use the Song of Solomon in marital counseling. In situations where it is needed, and when it seems the right time, I task them to rent a remote cabin for a weekend, with no kids, no friends, no pets, no cell phone (except one daily mail check) no computer, no TV. They are to use a New Living Translation to read the parts to each other. They often return from the weekend with broad smiles and a different attitude.
